Three times they had to hide in the brush to let shipping trains go by, but as the sun settled lower into the sky a new, human voice sounded over the radio; “All parties: the bus has left town. Unclaimed territory will be entered within the hour and exited via Grand Junction within ten hours. We have had reports of rebel activity in the UT over the last week, so extra security has been added to the bus.”

The line was silent for a moment before another voice responded, “How much extra security?”

The first voice sounded, punched through by static, “—four Denver cops will be patrolling the bus. Occupants have been instructed to keep all curtains drawn and lights off. Speeds will be randomly varied to prevent arrival at any particular point being timed.”

“Let’s hope the local banshee is busy for the night,” the second voice said.

“Spreading unfounded rumors is grounds for disciplinary action,” the first voice said.

The apology was drowned out in static.

“Banshee?” Russ said from the ground.

“Vivian,” Dustin said offhandedly, missing Russ’ look of confusion.

They were so close. So damn close. He dug into the ground with renewed fervor, finishing an hour later with a mound roughly four feet tall and four feet across. It would be enough. He hollowed out a divot in the center and placed the explosives, wrapped in the orange hat, in it. Producing a tin of gunpowder from the gun case, he sprinkled the whole thing around the explosives for a little extra sparkle in the dark.
