When Iâm home alone that night, Rachel texts.
Rachel: You doing okay? You didnât seem like yourself.
Carter: Itâs football. You win and you lose.
Rachel: If you want to talk, Iâm here.
Carter: Nah. Iâm all good.
She doesnât need to know Iâm in a funk. I turn off my phone and shut out the world.

A SEA URCHIN THINGY
Carter
A long run through the fog the next morning works wonders at putting the loss behind me.
It gives me something else to focus onâpeeling off miles.
So does the word of the day. Endemic.
It means growing or existing in a certain place or region. As I run, I turn it over in my head to take my mind off yesterday.
Like fog is endemic to San Francisco, like ups and downs are endemic to the game I play for a living, like Monday morning quarterbacking is endemic to, well, Mondays in the NFL.
After six miles, I shower, then head to work. Along the way, I stop by Caffertyâs home nearby. He lives with his husband, Jason, the rival quarterback for the cityâs other football team. During his first season with us, he was sneaking around seeing McKay on the down-low. When he finally fessed up to me, I wasnât pissed he was dating a rival. At the time, I was pissed heâd kept it from me for a whole season, since weâre buds. But I donât hold grudges. Lifeâs too short for that.
Besides, I like to give him a hard time for other things. Like the fact that he never wants to drive.
âDidnât you get a car once upon a time for this very reason?â I ask when he gets into my ride.
He smirks. âWhy drive when I have a driver?â
I shake my head, amused. This is good, this chitchat. It helps distract me too.
But as I weave through traffic, I go quiet for a bit, still stuck in my mood, till Cafferty clears his throat. âSo, Jason wanted me to invite you to our Halloween party.â
That pulls me out of my head. âAww, was it hard for you to say the word party, Caff?â
He grumbles a âno.â
âSounded hard to say,â I tease, since heâs not the most social cat.
âIt wasnât,â he says.
âYou hate parties,â I say.
He sighs. âI donât hate them.â
âYou hate them a little.â
âNo, seriously. I donât mind them,â he says, but he sounds a little like heâs protesting too much.
I slow at the light. âWhy donât you just tell your hubs you donât like parties?â
He shoots me a deadpan look. âIt was my idea to have the party. He likes parties. I said we should do it.â
Ahh, that makes sense. Heâs not annoyed about the event. Heâs rising to the occasion. Wanting to do something for his guy.
âThen I am definitely making you a T-shirt that saysâ¦Mister Compromise.â
âThanks,â he says dryly before he adds, âYou can bring someone. Obviously.â
The only person Iâd want to bring is my best friend. âThanks, Caff. Iâll ask Rachel,â I say, but then Iâm quiet once again. Even the thought of seeing her tonight isnât lifting my mood.
