"A moratorium on sex," she repeated. "Yes, I think that's a good idea." She half-hoped he would change his mind and disagree with her. That he would snatch her into his arms and . . . silence her with sex? Sweep away her common sense with passion?

No, they'd played those games too many times before, she told herself. It was time she took some responsibility for herself, instead of seeking refuge in the seductive fantasy of being swept away. She'd told Slade she was all grown up; it was time she proved it.

They stared at each other for a long moment.

Slade was the first to break the tension-charged silence. "That's it, then. As of right now, we'll officially declare a—"

"Moratorium on sex," Shavonne chimed in, so that they said it together.

They both laughed self-consciously.

Slade cupped her shoulders and drew her toward him. "I put my card with my telephone number on it on the nightstand. If you need anything at all tonight, I want you to call me." He bent to touch his lips to her forehead. "And if I don't hear from you tonight, I'll see you at ten tomorrow."

She raised her face to his. He was looking at her in such a way. . . . Her pulses raced. His gaze was warm and tender, his lips curved into a smile that sent little ripples of heat coursing through her.
