CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Ever

I don’t sleep, but I keep my eyes closed, resting until we stop to eat at Whistle Stop Cafe in Hinckley. It’s a cute place, and these three hulking boys look extra huge in the quaint cafe.

I’m awkward around Ethan at first, but Jude tugs me by the waist and helps me into a chair before sitting next to me, and then he brings up a game strategy that he and Ethan talk about for a while. Roscoe’s across from me and puts his feet around mine, pulling them forward with his until he has our legs wrapped together the way he wants. We stay that way while we eat. I never thought I’d like my legs twisted around someone else’s so much.

“This is delicious,” I tell him. “Thank you. You don’t need to pay for everything though—I brought plenty of cash for whatever we end up doing food-wise.”

“I invited you—I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”

I make a face and he laughs. “Are you that old school?”

“About wanting to take care of you, yes,” he says. When I try to protest, he holds up his hands. “Not that you need me to. And if I was that old school, I wouldn’t be willing to share you.”

Ethan stops midway through his sentence to Jude and looks at me, disgust in his eyes. “So, you are with both of them now.” He shakes his head. “Unbelievable. You guys are playing with fire.”

“You wish you could be burned,” Jude says. “We both like Ever and she likes both of us. As long as we’re good with our situation, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about it.” He turns to me. “Right?”

I swallow hard, feeling a little light-headed. “In theory, yes.” I look at Ethan, feeling the need to explain myself. “I do have reservations about it. I never want to come between their friendship…or yours with them. I know you hate me and don’t want me around, much less with them,” my voice trails off.

“How does this work?” He doesn’t deny that he hates me. “You’re just having freaking orgies together now?” His face is red and his hands are clenched into fists.

“No one’s having orgies. At least, for me, I think of orgies as everyone just having sex with any and everyone,” Roscoe says, his cheeks flushing as he looks down at his food. He takes a deep breath and looks at Ethan. “Ever and Jude know that I only want her. I haven’t had sex with anyone in a long time, and when I do again, I want it to be with her.”

I put my hand on my glass of iced water and then on my cheek, hoping it will help me cool down.

“Same,” Jude says, squeezing my other hand.

“And you expect her to be faithful to the two of you?” Ethan scoffs. “You’re both out of your goddamn mind.”
