“We’ve notified the ATF and Homeland Security,” Abara told the Wylds and the two boys over dinner. After he brought Zeke, Gabe, and Heather back to the house, he accepted Phil’s invitation to stay.

“Won’t they take the case away from you?” Gabe thought the detective seemed like he’d enjoy being the hero.

Abara took a moment to chew and swallow before answering. “This is a small town. We don’t have the sort of funding, manpower, or equipment it takes to go up against a well-armed compound of a hundred and fifty people. We’ll take all the help we can get.”

“Is this something Just Cause would get involved with?” Chloe asked.

“Doubtful,” Abara said. “They usually just deal with parahuman-related issues.” He paused for a few seconds, looking thoughtful. “Although, you know, it might be smart to call in the ones who could help us cut down the number of casualties. I’ll get a judge to designate them as a terrorist threat—shouldn’t be hard with the evidence—and then the governor can ask for Just Cause involvement. Sure wouldn’t hurt to have some guys who can take a bullet or eighty without blinking.”

“Or the psionicists. Ment once put everyone in an office building to sleep,” Chloe said.

The detective pointed his fork at her. “Now there’s a brilliant idea. Imagine the bloodshed we could avoid with that kind of help.”

“Sam, do you think it’s dangerous for the boys to be out in public?” Heather asked.

“We’ve been monitoring the compound via satellite and haven’t seen any vehicles leave, so it doesn’t appear anyone is looking for them.” He sipped the wine. “We know they have contacts outside the compound, but we have no way to track them. So, I’d say it’s best to be cautious. Coeur d’Alene’s not that big a town and it’s an obvious place for the boys to come.”

Phil poured more wine in Sam’s glass. “They’re welcome to stay here for a while, but there’s got to be somewhere safer.”

“We’ve contacted the witness protection folks. It’s technically too early for them to get involved, but we wanted their guidance on how to proceed in the meantime. We don’t want to create any records that could be used to find them.”

Zeke started to say something, but his voice came out squeaky. He cleared his throat and tried again. “I, uh, I just wanted to say . . . I’m really grateful for how nice everyone has been. I can’t even believe it. I was always taught the world was an ugly place and people who were . . . who weren’t like us were the reason for that. I was raised to hate all of you and now you’re taking better care of me than the folks I’ve known my whole life. So, um, thank you. Everyone.” He stared at his lap, feeling conspicuous.

Heather wiped at a tear on her cheek. “You’re welcome, Zeke.”

Phil, sitting to his left, clapped Zeke on the shoulder. “The world can be ugly, it’s true, but I believe there are more good people than bad people in it.
