The drive back home is one of the longest trips I've ever been on. My eyelids droop, but I'm too nervous about what's gonna happen next. Sleep won't come, so I silently watch the exit signs and listen to my babygirl's precious snoring.

Well, maybe not so precious. She certainly does have her father's nose, and snoring like a buzz-saw seems to be part of the package. She's also got his smarts, thank God for that, and I ain't exactly surprised she done figured it all out before everyone else. My babygirl wants to be something called an astrobiologist. I got no clue what that is, but I'll do whatever it takes to help her follow that dream.

If I don't fuck it up somehow like I did to her dad's dream.

Through strands of blond, I sneak a glance at him. Kyle's got his eyes on the road, one hand on the steering wheel and the other around Kylie's shoulder. She's leaning on him, fast asleep, as if it's the most normal thing. He's always been there for her, and I've always struggled to figure out why.

Why'd he come back to Alvarado? Why didn't he go on to get his doctorate in studyin' space and stars and sending things to Mars? Why didn't he join NASA like he used to spend hours tellin' me was his dream?

Part of me knows the answer - somehow, I tainted his dream. Ruined it. Stole it from him. Broke it into pieces, just like I break everything else I ever touch.

Hands fisting so hard I can feel my fingernails digging to my palms, I admit a truth I don't want to see. I'll end up breaking Kylie's dream, too. I'll break it, and burn it and taint it beyond repair, because that's what someone with a dirty soul like mine does.

Kylie is better off with Kyle, and they're both better off as far from me as possible.

So is Bastion. My sweet baby boy. Soon, he'll be old enough to have dreams of his own for me to destroy.

My eyes sting, but I suck it back. Turn it off. Hide it away.

Go away. Far away. The moonlight on the surface is so very far away.

Still, I reached for it. Too stubborn to not try. Too stupid to tie a proper knot from the stone to my ankle.

Slipping away. Far away.

It's two-o'clock in the morning, and I'm six years old all over again.

Why didn't Saul just let me drown?

"Sarah?"

With a few blinks, the lake is gone and I'm inhaling deep while staring into blue, piercing eyes. The truck's passenger door is open, cold air filling my lungs. Kyle's standing there, waiting for me to come back from a place I shouldn't be going. I got two kids who need me, for better or worse, and jumping into another lake ain't the right thing to do.

"Sorry," I mumble, dropping my gaze away from his. We're parked out front of my house, but there's no sign of Victoria's SUV or Saul.
