CHAPTER 16

Val woke up to a snoring head on her chest. As she looked down at Jessica, who had an arm draped around her waist and was still sleeping soundly, she thought to herself that at least Jessica wasn’t perfect. She smiled as Jessica snorted and then couldn’t hold in her laughter when she snorted again, but louder this time.

“Are you laughing at my snoring?” Jessica asked, waking up, likely because Val was shaking with laughter beneath her.

“Maybe,” she replied.

“That’s not very nice,” Jessica said, running a hand under Val’s shirt to rest on her abdomen. “I let you stay over and everything.”

“You let me stay over because we were up talking until three in the morning, and you didn’t want me driving home so late.”

“Well, I have heard such great things about your car,” Jessica said sarcastically. “What time is it?” she asked as she lifted her head, her long hair a mess around it.

“About nine,” Val replied. “I have to be at work by eleven today. I’m closing. I should probably–”

“If you say you should probably go, I’m going to be very upset with you,” Jessica said, rolling off of her and onto her back. “I at least need a hug before you run out on me.”

“I can do one better,” Val replied, rolling on top of her and looking down into those hazel eyes.

“There you go again, selling yourself short. This is way more than one better.”

Jessica wrapped her arms around Val’s neck and pulled her down for a kiss, morning breath and all. Val loved kissing this woman. There was just something that washed over her whenever they did this that made her feel safe and wanted at the same time. It didn’t hurt that Jessica made little sounds all the time that indicated just how much she wanted Val. Val’s hand slid up and under Jessica’s shirt and rested just below her breast.

“You should keep going,” Jessica encouraged.

“If I start, I won’t want to stop,” Val replied, kissing Jessica’s neck now.

“Who says you have to?”

“I do, Jess.” Val kissed her lips. “I have to go to work.”

“I hate your job right now,” Jessica said, kissing her again.

Val sat back up, straddling her, and said, “Why don’t you come over tomorrow night?”

“To your place?”

“Yeah.”

Jessica smiled and asked, “Why not tonight?”

“Because I’ll be at the store until at least nine. Plus, I need some time to clean it up a little. Devin, the tornado, had left her part of the place a mess.”

Jessica’s hands slid up the back of Val’s shirt and rubbed her back, leaving goosebumps wherever she touched.

“I’ll be there. Should I bring anything?”

“Just you,” Val said. “We can order in if that’s okay. I don’t have a lot of food in my fridge. Maybe you can bring over a copy of that new movie you’re in. There’s got to be some benefit to dating a movie star, right?” She winked at her.

“Oh, there is,” Jessica replied, sitting up and lifting Val’s shirt a little as she did.
