“Diana, we need to talk.” Logan’s voice rumbled in her ears.

Torn between worry and relief at seeing Logan in front of her, here of all places, Diana pulled ahead of Adrian.

“Is everything all right? Did something happen to Jack’s plane?” What else would bring Logan out of the woods and off the mountain? He wasn’t frivolous. Not Logan. He was steady, unflappable.

“No, I’m sure Jack is back on his island.” Logan barely spared a nod for Adrian as he possessively moved in behind Diana. It was too hot, like being weighed down with too many blankets on a warm night. She longed to push Adrian away. I need air. I need space.

“Then what?” Diana gripped Logan’s arm and the ring dropped onto the cement at his feet.

Logan looked down at the telltale proof of her evening out. Logan knelt to pick it up, the stone flashing in the glare of crystal chandeliers. “Looks like I’m too late.” He offered Adrian his right hand. “Congratulations.”

Adrian’s hand, although strong and capable seemed lost in Logan’s cavernous grip. One fast pump, short and to the point. “Thank you.”

“I’m sure you’ll be happy.” He took the ring from Diana and put it on her finger.

Diana wanted to scream, I don’t belong to anyone yet. Don’t give me away until I say so, but she stayed silent.

Let Logan believe she’d chosen, coming down here unannounced and scaring her like that. It would serve him right. Serve them both right. They were divvying her up like some kind of prize.

“Well, if there’s nothing wrong I guess I’ll go up to my room. I’m tired.”

Diana left them stunned and open-mouthed as she rang for the elevator and disappeared inside. She needed time to think.

How dare he come down here knowing full well she was meeting Adrian, and why? She had never made a secret of her plans. She had poured out her hopes and dreams and desires like tossing coins into a wishing well, watching them drift silently down into the murky depths and disappear, and always hoping to catch sight of a bright streamer of light illuminating her brightly cast fantasy, marking it for destiny. She had once told Logan of the ring she wanted as a down payment on the future. She was wearing the ring. So why did it seem so lifeless, so dull, so empty of hope and promise? Why now when everything finally seemed accessible? Why?

Diana walked out of the elevator at her floor in a sort of daze. She held the ring-clad hand in front of her not quite believing what she saw glinting up at her. It was real. Adrian had given her the ring she told him about so many years ago. The ring they had talked about. She had never shown him the drawing but he remembered. That must mean some part of his still loved Lynn, still loved her.

She remembered it all so clearly. He had received some brochure or other from a jewelry store touting another diamond sale.
