We’re still connected, and I wish I could freeze time, make all this shitty stuff disappear and it just be the two of us.

I stare into her eyes, hoping what she’s about to say isn’t going to change everything. Yeah, it may ruin the moment, but I can live with that if it proves she trusts me, if it means we can have more times like this. If it’s some shit that just leaves me with more questions than answers, that’s a totally different scenario. It’s one I’m not prepared to face. Kissing her one last time, I caress her cheek. “I’m listening.”

She nods. “You’re going to help me, right?”

“Jules, you shouldn’t even have to ask that at this point.”

“You said some things in your kitchen that I need to confirm were just part of the game. I’m not playing right now, and I need to trust you’re not too.”

Trust. I fucking love it when she opens up to me. And this is why I knew having her come here was the best possible way of doing this. For some reason when we’re here, it’s like everything melts away, all the barriers, the obstacles, the walls, the games…they dissipate. “There was one thing I said in the kitchen that is most definitely true.”

Her eyes bulge. “Which part?”

“If I find out you’re lying to me, if any of what you’ve said to me in my house is untrue—especially your feelings toward me—we’re done, and I’m out.”

She swallows. “I’m not lying.”

“Just omitting details when it’s convenient for you.”

She shakes her head. “No. I’m about to tell you everything, but I needed to know I could trust you too. And honestly, I’m about to give you everything—way more than you’ve given me to prove just how much I trust you with all of this—with my life, Theo.”

“Really? I’m all ears.”

“Last night in the elevator…” Fuck. She’s really going to tell me. My dick immediately starts to harden because nothing is a bigger turn on than hearing that she didn’t think she could tell me something, but she knows I’m not going to let anything happen to her—that she can tell me anything. “I was approached by a guy named Jakobe Martin.”

Well, that’s a cock blocker. I don’t want to think of her in an elevator with anyone other than me. “And…”

“I was so scared, Theo. I thought you were listening to it all, that you’d come help me. But then again, he stopped the elevator so you wouldn’t have been able to get to me.”

Pulling out of her, I fall onto the bed next to her. “Did he? Did he…” I think I’m going to throw up. “Was he Charlie’s guy?” Nothing like thinking you can protect her, and then it all turning to shit. My jaw ticks, and my pulse starts to beat so loudly I can hear it in my ear. I’m going to kill the motherfucker.

“No.” She shakes her head, but then nods.

“Which is it, Jules? Tell me.”

“No. I mean, he just tried to kiss me.
