The next day and the ones that followed she spent as much time asleep as possible, when she wasn’t busy with the chores the woman gave her which took up most of the day. She was constantly brought face to face with the hardships of life here. Not just by the endless chores, but also by the lack of all comforts. For example, there was no bathroom and what washing she was able to do had to be carried out in cold water in a tin basin in her room. She began to note down details of her everyday life in a notebook she’d found, together with a felt tipped pen, in her beach bag. Writing them down made her feel that she was a little more in control of her existence, and soothed her in her worst moments by giving her something to do.
