Chapter 19

The surgery came and went. The cancer didn’t spread, but Adam would need to be checked regularly and undergo three months of chemotherapy. He’d lost most of his hair and opted to shave his head before it thinned out completely. He looked kind of sexy with a bald head — sexier than I would have expected.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months as Adam recovered. I leaned on Jackson’s shoulder for support. Having him in my life was easy and difficult at the same time. Oftentimes, on the inside I felt like I was living a double life, coming home to my husband and then every few days spending time with Jackson at the salon or even grocery shopping, as he consoled me. He took my mind off Adam’s illness and filled me with much-needed strength. No matter how much I tried to shed the confusing feelings I still had for Jackson, though, it was impossible. My only remaining solution was to accept them and cherish him as a friend — best friend.

We had a long winter and late spring this year. It was almost the end of June and the spring flowers were still in bloom, extending my favorite season, well into summer. The sun shone brighter, and for the first time in a long time, I felt life slowly drip into my veins. Two weeks ago, the news that my husband was in remission was the best news I ever received.

Today we were going to Jackson’s house. Adam thought we’d been invited to dinner to celebrate his beating cancer. I drove between old willow trees down a winding driveway. Branches swayed near the ground, some tips gently brushing against the pavement. As we pulled up to his house, or mansion I should say, I felt my mouth open. Adam looked like he had the wind knocked out of him.

“Holy crap! I knew the guy was loaded, but this is beyond what I expected.”

“Mommy, Jackson lives in a castle,” Sophie gasped.

I could have argued, but if I did, I’d be wrong.

“Remember what we talked about?” I turned around to the kids. Though I was afraid I’d need to repeat the rules to Adam as well. Sometimes his mouth could be unfiltered.

“Respect and be polite,” the twins said at the same time.

“And stay with me all the time. It looks like you can easily get lost in this place.” I parked the car in the next available spot.

“How many people did he invite?” Adam asked.

“It’s probably his staff,” I lied.

Adam was supposed to return to work on Monday, and he didn’t know that Jackson had planned a surprise welcome back party for him. The past six months had been a whirlwind, to say the least. Sometimes I lost track of time. If it weren’t for Lou constantly dropping by to help out, I would have sent the kids to school on a Sunday. I needed a break from the crazy. Actually, we both needed a break, from the illness and from each other.
