The last three fireplaces are still flaming by the time I reach them, but they’re definitely on their last leg. I throw on some logs, stoke the fires quickly, and take the cart back to the loading dock to be filled for the next round.

All the while, I’m imagining Elizabeth. The way her brunette locks frame her face. The way she looked hopeful when she asked if she would see me around. The anger that lit up her features like a firework when she was talking about her ex.

I struggled when she told me that story. I wanted to find that piece of garbage human she was going to marry and give him a piece of my mind. What kind of bonehead looks at a woman like Elizabeth and thinks that he can do better? I’ve been wondering ever since I left her presence what I can do to make her stay here, with me, for the rest of our lives.

It’s silly of me because she probably has a life somewhere in Ohio or Virginia or something like that. She wouldn’t leave all that behind for a man she’s just met. But that doesn’t mean I can’t daydream about it.

I’m about to be thirty and I’m nearing that point in my life where desperation is about to kick in. Every woman that I meet and have an affair with is wonderful and great, but it ends as soon as her vacation does. She leaves and I’m stuck here. While I could date one of the girls on staff, no one really strikes me the way Elizabeth does. So even though I know I shouldn’t do it, I go looking for her.

She isn’t in the entrance’s great room, a sprawling hub of activity where you can sign up for skiing lessons, get directed to the nearest bar, or find out when the next act in the entertainment center is going to start. I venture into the smaller rooms down the various hallways, not finding her sitting, reading, or sipping on a hot chocolate. It’s only been an hour or two. Where could she have gone?

I even stoop so low as to roam through the halls of the hotel area. I didn’t ask the receptionist where her room was because I didn’t know her last name. I just walked up and down the hallways from one floor to the next, hoping I’d run into her.

After an hour of exhaustive searching, Elizabeth is nowhere to be found. There’s a chance she’s back in her room, enjoying a late afternoon nap or a nice bath, but I wouldn’t intrude on her there.

I make my way back to the main floor feeling defeated. After walking across seven floors of space, I’ve gotten my steps in for the day and I’m ready for a nap myself.

But this is precisely when I run into her. I head for the elevator and when I round the corner, there she is, standing in front of it. “Hey, you,” I greet with a smile.
