Chapter 4

(Luke)

WAITING FOR ZITI TO tell Laney that she was leaving didn’t bother Luke; that a couple of the men around Laney tried to start dancing with her did bother him, however. Even though they’d only just met, he felt a sort of protectiveness over her that he’d never felt over a woman before. Something about her made him want to protect her, and at the same time made him want to ravage her.

As he waited, it was only a couple of minutes, but it felt like hours, Luke reined in his feelings, put them on a taut leash, and pasted on a smile of what he hoped looked like nonchalance.

Ziti handled herself admirably with the men. Otherwise, Luke would have gone out there and handled the situation himself. He’d never been afraid of confrontation; in fact, most of his life had been lived in some sort of conflict.

That Ziti had no clue about his lake house was exciting. Luke couldn’t wait to show it to her. Sure, he was bragging, boasting even, but he wanted to impress her enough that she would be wooed into his bed—he’d done worse in the past and wasn’t about to start apologizing for his actions now. If he’d led an apologetic life as opposed to the one he lived, he would have nothing to show for his efforts save an ulcer and a mountain of bills he couldn’t pay. That’s exactly what had happened to his mother after his father had left them. Luke swore to never be that way, and so far, he had not been that way.

Finally taking Ziti’s hand, Luke breathed easily again—she was safely at his side. She had willingly come along with him even though she really didn’t know him. Of that much, she had been dead right.

“Did she give you any warnings about going off to the lake with a stranger?” He chuckled, but he really wanted to know. How he presented to others was interesting. He really didn’t want to come off as being a scary stranger to the women, anyway. The men, that was a totally different story. He opened the door and let her exit in front of him—to be chivalrous but also because he wanted a good view of her ass and those legs that he so wanted to be between.

“Not really. She checked you out and said you looked safe enough.” She grinned and shoved her hands into the back pockets of her jeans.

What would her ass feel like through those jeans? Better yet, what would it feel like without those jeans? The twisting of his gut told him he had best get hold of his hormones just in case she wasn’t up for a first-night tumble in the bed.

“I look safe enough, huh?” He caught up to her and walked in-step with her through the parking lot. “Well, I don’t know whether that’s a compliment or an insult.” He thought about it.

“Oh, from Laney, it’s a definite compliment. She’s a hard-nosed lawyer by day.
