JOSEPH WAS WAITING in her office when she returned from the courthouse. Sophia was tense and seeing Joseph did nothing to ease the tension. Why was he here? Had Joan decided to add him to the case after all? She had two paralegals working with her and at this late date the addition of Joseph would send a message of fear to the defense.
He wore one of his understated dark-blue suits with a light blue shirt and matching tie. His wardrobe consisted of only shades of blue. When he’d first joined the staff here, he’d been ribbed about it and had told them he liked the blue skies approach to law and thought his suits conveyed that.
But then they all had their little rituals and superstitions, which was why she was worried about his presence here today. She’d had a great day in court though. Only one time had she been distracted by Mitch the man, not Mitch the lawyer. That had been when he’d paced in front of her during his opening remarks. He’d paused to lean on the edge of her table and the scent of his aftershave had assailed her. She’d had to close her eyes for a minute to regain her composure.
Alice was busy on the phone. Sophia dropped the file with notes for her to type in her in-box. She scribbled a Post-it note to let her secretary know she needed the notes before Alice went home.
“Joseph, are you waiting for me?” she asked.
“I am.”
“Come on in.”
On the credenza was a vase of flowers. She suspected it was from the other ADAs. There were days when she really loved her job.
“I see our flowers arrived,” he said, confirming her suspicion.
“Thanks.”
“No problem. Listen, I’m going up against Petralucci next week and Joan said you might have some advice.”
Sophia sank back in her chair and talked law with Joseph, but her mind was elsewhere. She was afraid the case was too finely matched. Mitch had made some eloquent points in the courtroom and she was regretting the wager she’d made to keep him from realizing how deeply his reappearance in her life was affecting her. Now she feared she might very well lose the case, and even if she didn’t, a weekend of sex with Mitch wasn’t what she needed, not now while this restlessness was prowling through her soul.
“Deltonio?”
Damn. What had Joseph said? “Sorry, it was a long day. I’m still reviewing it in my head.”
“No problem. I’ve done that a time or two.”
“I’ll have Alice pull all my notes on Petralucci. He’s prone to grandstanding, but otherwise he’s a good opponent in the courtroom.”
“Thanks,” Joseph said, standing to leave.
Sophia followed him to the door. Alice was signing for another basket. “Is this from you guys too?”
“Nope. Just the flowers.”
Sophia felt a sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach as Joseph walked over to survey the cellophane wrapped package. Was it from Mitch? The third day they’d had their fantasy day. His fantasy had been her in leather undergarments and high-heeled stilettos.
