Chapter 11

AT SEVEN THE next morning, Jesse pulled up to Tori’s cabin with Luke in his car right behind him. The goal was to finish setting up the solar panels and have them running before Luke and McKenna headed back in the afternoon. Which would really help Jesse. The less time he had to work closely with Tori the better.

When Jesse parked and got out, he expected Tori to come out and greet him, but she didn’t.

Luke came up beside him. “What do you think? Still asleep?”

“Yeah.” Which was just as well.

As quietly as they could, they worked on the solar array. An hour later, Hope’s SUV pulled up to the cabin, and Hope and a petite woman got out.

“Hey, Jesse. Hey, Luke,” Hope hollered. She turned to her companion as they made their way over. “Jesse Montana and Luke McAvoy are two of Sweet Home’s most eligible bachelors.”

Startled by the strange introduction, Luke opened his mouth as if to contradict her, but Hope went on.

“Luke is the manager of First Regional Bank in Anchorage and Jesse is the soon-to-be host of a new show for HGTV—Homestead Recovery.”

Jesse and Luke frowned at each other. Then Jesse turned back to the women. “Hi, Hope. What’s going on?”

Hope smiled like she was delivering a lottery check. “I went by your place, and since your truck was gone, I knew you’d be here.”

That still hadn’t answered his question.

Hope gestured to the other woman. “This is Kit Armstrong, owner of Real Men of Alaska. You’ve seen the magazine in the Hungry Bear, right?”

“Yes.” He’d seen countless women either flipping through the magazine at the Hungry Bear or buying it. But worst of all was when he’d seen the Real Men of Alaska magazine wrapped in Tori’s arms.

The short woman took over. “Real Men of Alaska isn’t primarily a magazine. It’s a matchmaking service.”

“Okay . . .” Jesse put an arm out to stop Luke as he stepped back as if to make an escape. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Hope jumped in like she knew Kit was going to lose her audience. “Kit finds matches for women who are looking for real men . . . like the men here in Alaska.”

Nice try at flattery, Hope.

“And in Scotland, too,” Kit added.

“Scotland?”

“Yes. That’s where I met my husband,” Kit said. “I’m just here temporarily.”

“Her manager got married and recently moved to San Francisco. You remember Donna DeMarco, right? She’s older than us and moved away to Fairbanks when we were in high school.”

“So I’m in Alaska to find a new manager—”

Jesse started to breathe easier.

“—and to find new real men recruits. Like yourselves.”

Jesse sighed and glared at Luke.

Luke shook his head. “Not my idea. I didn’t tell her to come here.”

“Actually, Donna suggested I contact Piney about bachelors around Sweet Home and also to see if Piney knew anyone who could take her place as manager.” Kit chuckled, a tinkling kind of laugh. “I’m interviewing a few people tomorrow for the manager position, and Piney sent me out here to talk to you today.
