Chapter 10

When Alexa woke up, she was staring at the Outlets in Castle Rock, Colorado. The bus’s door opened like the sound of a steam engine.

Sam stood up, looking over her.

Alexa turned, seeing Sam’s parents.

Henry and Doris both stood by the curb. His dad looked a lot like Sam, with less hair and thick glasses, but his frame was tall and he stood erect.

Alexa smiled. She liked his parents. They had always been so good to her when they were dating. His dad always looked like he’d just heard a marvelous joke. Doris looked older than the last time she’d seen her. Her hair was grayer and her skin seemed pale. She even seemed shorter than she had been before, but her smile was the same—large and happy.

Stepping off of the bus felt surreal, the air was crisp. The leaves made the oranges and reds bright against the majestic structure. A dull ache stretched into Alexa’s heart. She hadn’t been back here since the day Sam had proposed.

“Alexa.” His mother stepped to her, embracing her tightly. Alexa smiled and hugged her back. Sam’s mom had always had a way of making her feel at home.

“Thanks for having me.”

Doris reached for Sam. “We are happy to have you.” She hugged Sam, resting her head against his chest.

Alexa had never noticed that Sam was so much taller than his mother. Sam snuggled her close and closed his eyes.

“Looking good, my dear.” His father put his arm gently around her shoulders, pulling her into his side.

Alexa laughed, knowing the opposite was true. “Thanks, Henry.” She squeezed back, and then pulled away. “It’s been a while.” She twirled in a slow circle, taking in the nearby shopping center and the mountains.

“It’s been too long.” Henry took Doris’s hand and playfully slugged Sam in his good arm. “What happened?”

Sam shrugged and fell into step with Alexa. “An accident.”

Ten minutes later, they pulled into the nicely kept modest brick home in down town Castle Rock. The yard was well manicured and the hanging porch swing looked inviting.

“Here we are.” His dad turned off the engine and turned back. “Now, son, I know you don’t want other people to know that she is here. How long should we keep her hidden?”

Sam looked at Alexa. “I think at least a week. Maybe more. I’m just going to tell the Bureau that you are at a secure location and that I think we may be compromised.”

Alexa nodded. She was surprised that she didn’t feel afraid. “I need to call my secretary, Mary. But I can do that from a burner phone, right? That won’t be traceable.”

Sam shook his head. “I’ll get you an untraceable phone. Remember, you can’t give anyone any idea as to where you are.”

“Right.” Alexa climbed out of the car.

Sam’s mother smiled. “It’s so nice to have you. Since Sam’s brother, Mike moved to Arizona and, well, you know Dave lives in Boulder…it’s been so quiet.” She tapped her chin. “I’m putting you in Mike’s old room.
