SHANE STEERED THE MINIVAN through the base, his gut roiling with dissatisfaction that he couldn’t have done more to address the possible threat directed at his family.
It had been a long morning for him and Sherry talking to the OSI. At least the girls had been occupied with their morning at a downtown aquarium in a small group outing with other homeschooled children. After that they would go to their afternoon of vacation Bible school.
He and Sherry had actually managed to have lunch alone together, something he’d never before realized was a rarity. Why hadn’t he made a point to do that more often? Even if it was just a burger together. They hadn’t talked about anything earth-shattering. Perhaps that had been the whole point. They spent very little time simply hanging out together catching their breath from the manic pace of their lives.
He’d been busy with work—everyone in the military was, given the deployment pace. Even at home he naturally eased into a pattern of eating lunch with his crew. It was more relaxed, no worrying about who said what that started them on a downward spiral to a fight.
He hated to fight.
And really, what did he have to offer her? His smart sexy wife? He had a high school diploma and some money tucked away from his baseball years, but she would just as soon sleep in a tent.
She had two upper level degrees and spoke four languages to his two. The best thing, sometimes he thought the only thing, he could give her was a stable home, and a safe one…when he was there to take care of them.
Yeah, he was a stand-up guy. He wanted to be there for her, and the one thing he could give her, she could already give herself. Had to, because he was gone all the time.
How bad did that suck?
All of which was moot now. No time to ponder. Life had gone back on supersonic speed since it was time to get the girls. He reminded himself that the whole missing sticker incident could have been purely random. Whoever had taken the sticker likely had been randomly targeting military cars. There was still the possibility that the damn thing had just fallen off the windshield.
Yeah right.
And pigs were gonna fly out of his ears.
As he wound his way around the barricades set up on his way out the gate, he was reminded of all the heightened security at military installations since 9-11. No more driving straight up to a gate. Now they had to make a serpentine path around an obstacle course with the threat of spikes to pop tires ever present. All gate guards were heavily armed now. And ID checks were no longer random.
He’d watched all those changes implemented as he’d joined up right after 9-11.
The world had changed—and the military had changed right along with the rest of the world.
Clear of the gate and back into the town, he drove on, aware of Sherry silent beside him. Luckily the girls had an activity scheduled for the day.
