* * * *

Late in the evening, he’s fallen asleep on his side of the couch.

“Adrian,” I whisper, crouched in front of him.

He squints as he wakes. “Eva?”

“You should go to bed.”

He stands up, still half-asleep, and heads toward the bathroom as I stay behind to shut off the TV and straighten the cushions. I cross the corridor after he exits the bathroom and pause.

“Good night, Adrian.”

Clutching his bedroom door handle, he spins and observes me without responding.

“Good night,” I repeat.

Immobile, he murmurs, “I didn’t even kiss you. Not the way I should have.”

My heart skips a beat, and I just stand here, stunned. The soft light beaming from the bathroom graces his side, the deep blue of his eyes shimmering. He releases the handle to step toward me, and I don’t move, hypnotized by his piercing stare.

It’s a bad idea. I should stop him. We agreed a few hours ago that nothing should happen between us, but he takes another step, only an inch from me, and I want him even closer.

My heart races as he leans in, studying me. His palm lifts to my neck, fingers tangling in my hair, and he pulls my face to his. His breathing is as ragged as mine. “Eva, I’m dying to kiss you.” His desperate voice, rumbling in his throat, echoes through my core.

Words evade me. As an answer to his plea, I reach for his waist, lift on my toes, and push myself against his muscular chest. His mouth ghosts over mine, his other hand gripping my hip, and my eyes flutter closed. I float on the electric current running between us as his lips press on mine, his kiss languid and sensual. My heart pounds and my skin ignites under his touch. His tongue grazes my lower lip, the tip caresses mine, gentle, tender, dancing in a slow rhythm. I melt, intoxicated by his heady fragrance, his thumping heartbeat resonating against my breasts. His fist clutches my hair harder, his grip on my hip tightening, his tongue slides inside, stroking mine with passion, and a moan escapes me, pleading for more. Then he closes his mouth on mine, leaving a last kiss, delicate, almost chaste. When he pulls back, his gaze drowns in sadness.

“Goodbye,” he whispers and lets go of his hold on me.

My heart sinks as I grasp the finality of his choice of word. Adrian didn’t say ‘goodnight’.

Before I can react, he turns around and walks to his bedroom, closing the door behind him.

I totter to my room on weak legs and slump down on the bed, my heart still hammering, a flow of images whirling in my head—the desperation in his look, his velvety voice, the intensity of his kiss. It meant more than a rebound.

But Adrian said goodbye to what we could’ve been.
