LANGE, TOM—A detective who joined the LAPD in 1967 and spent 16-years with the robbery and homicide unit, Lange was one of the lead investigators assigned to the Simpson case. He was notified at his home about the murders and arrived at the condominium on South Bundy at about 4:30 am
Called as a witness early in the trial, Lange, 49, and as bald as the late Phil Silvers, underwent persistent questioning by the defense about the reasons police didn’t photograph the cup of melting ice cream on the banister in order to help establish the time of death. Earlier, during the slow speed chase, it was Lange who first contacted Simpson by cellular phone and assumed the role of crisis negotiator, doing his best to calm the distraught man down and talk him into surrendering. (See: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream; Sex; and Vannatter, Philip.)
LAPD—The impending debut of the new television cop show showing LAPD officers in heroic roles serving the public and running down miscreants was announced just as the police department was reeling under the furor created by the Fuhrman tapes and other criticism and insinuations leveled by the Simpson defense. (See: Fuhrman Trial.)
LAPD HEADQUARTERS—The downtown police nerve center where Simpson was taken and booked after the arrest at his Brentwood estate following the slow speed chase.
LAPD CRIME LABORATORY—While the entire LAPD was taking a shellacking from the defense throughout the trial, the police laboratory and its DNA testing facility came in for special criticism for reputedly being poorly operated, dirty and a place where such sloppy work was performed there was a serious risk of cross-contamination of specimens. Denver microbiologist John Gerdes who testified he examined the work of 23 DNA testing laboratories across the country, was asked at one point if the LAPD facility was worse than any other forensic laboratory he observed. His reply: “Definitely, by far.”
Gerdes declared the laboratory had “a substantial contamination problem that is persistent. It is chronic in the sense that it doesn’t go away. It’s there month after month, and it doesn’t go away.” The expert’s testimony was critically important to the defense effort to raise reasonable doubt about the devastating DNA evidence presented earlier by the prosecution. (See: Gerdes, John.)
LARRY KING LIVE—Popular CNN talk show hosted by Larry King. (See: Dershowitz, Alan M.; King, Larry; and Phone Call.)
LAST MEALS—After a 6 am wakeup call on Tuesday, October 3, Simpson was offered what turned out to be his final breakfast on the tax-payers of Los Angeles county. It was a light meal of dry cereal with 8-ounces of milk, creamed chipped beef, four-ounces of apple juice and coffee. The previous evening the last dinner prepared for the reluctant guest of the county was a chicken patty with gravy, rice, spinach, a cherry crisp and coffee. The lights were turned out in his cell, along with those of other inmates, at 8 pm.
LEE, DR. HENRY—A onetime police captain in Taipai, Dr. Lee and his Malaysian wife, Margaret, arrived in the United States in 1965 with a grand total of $50 between them.
