Sydney’s body still tingled from the memory of Luke. It took her almost thirty minutes to wash her face after he surrendered the bathroom. Most of the time was spent staring at herself in the mirror, wide-eyed and slack-jawed as she tried to process what happened. She rubbed the damp cloth on her face, hoping the warm water could calm her hammering heart. She replayed the kiss, the feeling of being trapped between his chest and a wall, the way he held onto her. It was so demanding, so hungry and full of emotion, Sydney hardly believed it was Luke who had kissed her like that.

Was it just for the cover? He had called her ‘Nicole’ after, but it felt too real. The way he looked at her in the dress, the anger in his voice when he took her away from the bar, the passion in the kiss. How could he have faked all of that?

She took a deep breath and tried to push it all away. They couldn’t let feelings, fake or otherwise, get in the way of the mission when they were running out of time.

Besides, he wasn’t her type, and she wasn’t his. As soon as they got home, she would go back to sitting at a desk all day while he kept chasing bad guys and dodging bullets. How could they possibly have real feelings for each other when their real lives were so different?

After she finished cleaning her face, she spent the next couple of minutes psyching herself up. The kiss was for the cover. Luke was her temporary partner helping her find Callie. They were on a dangerous mission, not a romantic vacation.

With a determined sigh, she stepped out of the bathroom in her pajamas and joined Luke in the bedroom. He was laying on the bed with his back to her, the bedside lamp already off as she crawled under the covers and faced him, putting the pillow barrier back between them.

After turning her light off, she whispered, “Goodnight, Jake.”

His response was gruff. “Goodnight, Nicole.”

She thought that was that. Then, his arm rustled under the blanket, slowly getting closer to her. It moved over the pillow until she met his hand with hers, and Luke’s pinky squeezed hers, gently, with promise, before moving back to his side of the bed.
