Paige versus Emma for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Arrival.
One day during training, the FCW women attempted to gang up on Paige and accused her of trying to injure Summer Rae on purpose. “There was one point when Norman Smiley, who was our trainer at the time, had me and Summer go through this wrestling move where I tackled her, we knocked shoulders, and she fell down,” says Paige. “I was used to being on the indies where I would stick it in stiff but safe, where I was really snug, and she was used to dipping low because all the girls were a lot shorter than us. So I gave her this tackle, and she dipped low, not expecting me to go that hard, and her teeth went into my shoulder. She lay on the floor, crying, and this was my first week there. The other girls were like, ‘She’s trying to sabotage you; she’s trying to get you fired,’ and I’m like, ‘No, I’m not. It was an accident, you crazy bitches.’ They were nuts.
“Even Norman called me. I was the only female who wasn’t going to WrestleMania in Miami because I had only been there for about four months. So Norman called me, and he said, ‘I just want to apologize if you thought I was mean.’ Norman is not a mean person, so I didn’t realize he was being mean to me, but he said, ‘I’m sorry if I was ever rude or mean to you. When you first came in, I believed you thought your shit didn’t stink because you were on the indies, but I was proven wrong. You’re actually really nice, so I apologize for any of the trouble you went through in the first few months. Also, you’re going to WrestleMania.’ So I was like, ‘Oh, wow, now people can be nice to me. Now I’ve done the initiation.’ But it’s not like that anymore; it’s like a big family now. In FCW, you were fighting to get attention. Now, the right people are in Orlando watching us every week. I understood why I was being treated differently, but I was like, ‘Dude, I want to be here. I’ll start from scratch. I’ll do whatever you want just to be here.’”
For Paige, it was about having a new vision for the Women’s Division. “I came into FCW thinking, ‘I’m going to create change,’” she says. “That’s what I always wanted to do. I wanted to be the different Diva. I’m not trying to mold myself into what a Diva is supposed to be. I’m going to be different. Eventually, there were more girls coming in with the same attitude, which was great, but it was hard because at that point in time, people were classifying the Divas as the ‘toilet break.’ It was really hard to overcome that and to get the respect from the WWE Universe and even from some of the guys in the business. So we were struggling with those obstacles at the time.
