Chapter Eight
Saturday, January 12 6:15 a.m.
Claudia slipped out of her sleeping bag and tiptoed to the bathroom. The hush of fresh snow blanketing the cabin had woken her as effectively as any alarm. As a girl, the quiet after the snow was full of potential. She and Diana would race outside, making trails across the white expanse. They’d try to match their Dad’s long stride, give up, and just connect the dots.
She cleaned up and dressed quickly, grateful she’d tossed her flannel-lined jeans into her suitcase. Whether or not they had new intel, she and Nate needed to come up with a plan to get Diana out of that compound. Today. She couldn’t risk spending more time with him than absolutely necessary. She wanted him too much and he’d made it clear he wasn’t the happy-ever-after type. For a moment she just stood there and allowed the warmth in the idea that he seemed to want her as well wash over her.
With a heavy sigh, she exited the bathroom and prepared to face her fantasy—and reality.
Nate slept soundly on the floor in the sleeping bag. She moved carefully so she wouldn’t wake him as she built up the fire. She could stare at the man all day long and call it time well spent. The memory of that kiss made her lips tingle all over again. It was a wonder she’d slept at all. No matter what rationale she applied to the moment, it fell apart. That kiss hadn’t been logical or the result of an adrenaline rush. She couldn’t help herself. She just had to go down that path again—it was hard to believe that a man like Nate wanted her for anything beyond her brain.
The concept that awkward, nerdy Claudia Mitchell prompted heat and passion in tall, dark, and sexy Nate was preposterous. Except she’d been there. She’d felt his mouth and hands on her body.
She moved toward the coffee pot, feeling the girlish smile on her face. Whatever happened, whoever she might meet in the future, she couldn’t imagine a better kiss. As she stared out the window at the drifts of sparkling snow she didn’t think she’d ever be cold again. Not with that kiss to keep her warm.
In her back pocket, her phone vibrated with a new email. She pulled it out and checked the screen. Her CIA contact. A blend of trepidation and anticipation filled her as she clicked on the icon to read it. A moment later, she groaned at the report.
“How bad is it?” Nate asked, sitting up.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to wake you,” she said. She took a chance and looked his way, immediately regretting it. The flannel shirt he wore was a little wrinkled from him sleeping in his clothes and still it looked... soft and warm and just plain good. His hair was tousled, his beard a bit thicker with another day’s growth, but his eyes were clear and focused. On her. Good grief, her sister was in the grip
