Chapter Eleven

Keith dropped his hands and turned away.

“Time to stop? Why?”

Who was he to say it was time to stop? Had he any idea how arousing his kisses were? How inflaming his touch was? Didn’t he have any idea how much she wanted him?

“The next thing you know, we’ll get carried away,” he said slowly.

She put her hands on her hips, “What does that mean?”

“We need a chance to think things through. It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment. I don’t want you doing something that you’ll regret later. Sex between us can only complicate things.”

“I’m not so sure. They seem pretty complicated to me right now.”

Drea turned and ran up the stairs. She wished she could slam the door behind her to let him know how angry she was, but that’d wake Peggy.

She grabbed his pillow from the bed and threw it against the door. She was so mad she could spit. She'd touched heaven tonight in his arms and he thought it complicated things.

She’d show him complicated. She’d get him so tied up in knots he wouldn’t know which way was up. How dare he stop.

Unless…unless he hadn’t been as caught up in the moment as she had been.

She sank onto the bed.

She didn’t think that was the case. He’d seemed pretty involved to her.

But what did she know? She did not consider herself an expert on men. Her kisses, while nice, she was sure, certainly didn’t drive him wild.

She closed her eyes in anguish. Was there nothing there for him to come to love?

She stood to take off her dress. Vowing to be the most loving wife he ever saw, she wouldn't leave unless he flat out told her to get lost. Otherwise she was sticking to him like glue to paper.

Slipping beneath the sheet, she turned out the light, wondering if he planned to come up to bed tonight.

Wondering what she could do that would make him see her as a possible partner for life.

She clung to the fact that he didn’t seem to like the idea of her dating other men. Was that a start?

Did that mean he wanted her for himself? What could she do to make him admit that?

Drea lay awake, counting the minutes. What was Keith doing? She came upstairs a half hour ago. Was he planning to come to bed tonight? He could easily sleep downstairs on the sofa. As long as he awakened before his mother, she’d never know, never suspect her son was anything but happily married.

Which he could be, if he only knew it, Drea repeated quietly to herself. They'd been happy in Kuwait. Or at least content.

And she was nothing like Diane. Why couldn’t he see that? Why couldn’t he let himself relax and enjoy what they had between them, let himself envision a future with her? Give love a chance to grow?

The minutes slowly ticked by. She wasn’t the slightest bit tired. Her body still hummed from the hot kisses they’d shared in the kitchen.
