Chapter Nine

Kelly watched her daughter unload Scotty from his car seat. Her grandson sprinted across the driveway toward her open arms, and she gave him huge hug. Then Kelly led Scotty into the house holding his hand.

“Thanks for doing this, Mom,” C.B. carried Scotty’s duffle bag with her and followed Kelly inside.

“You know I don’t mind helping out.”

“Since I started working, I’ve asked for your help a lot more.” C.B. sounded defensive. She dropped the bag on the sofa. “I brought his blanket and pajamas. Make sure he brushes his teeth before bed.”

“I know the drill.” Kelly surveyed her daughter, who was dressed in a blue, two-piece pantsuit. “What’s going on today?”

C.B. averted her gaze and shifted her stance. “Mr. Madison has asked for my help in Lexington. I thought I’d better look the part. I don’t want to disappoint him.”

“Well, you look beautiful.”

C.B. smiled. “You’re a bit prejudiced, Mom.”

“Guilty! I’m a proud mother, you know?”

C.B. blushed and busied herself settling Scotty in with his wooden blocks and toy trains. Her daughter reminded her so much of herself—overprotective and sensitive. How Kelly had loved the little girl she’d given birth to so many years earlier. Now her baby had a baby of her own. It was gratifying, to say the least.

But something was going on with her daughter, even though C.B. wouldn’t own up to it. Just as a mother’s sixth sense told her when something was wrong, Kelly knew C.B. well enough to see a faint change in her mood. If asked, she wasn’t sure she could explain the difference to Rob. Was it a lighter step? A subtle glow? She couldn’t remember the last time Kelly had dressed up like this. The part-time job certainly had been good for C.B.

Kelly paused and sharply scrutinized her daughter. Unless… Could it be? She hoped C.B. had learned from her past mistakes, because the more she thought about it, the more Kelly was convinced it wasn’t simply work that had buoyed C.B.’s spirits.

It was someone.
