Chapter 15
When I woke up, it took a few minutes for my mind to make the transition from the jumbled memory of my nonsensical dreams to the grounded solidness of reality.
Everything was dark inside the apartment and I still needed a moment to remember where I was.
As soon as I recalled my whereabouts, my thoughts instantly circled back to Joel and I felt a weight come over me when I remembered what had happened that afternoon.
Shit.
I had agreed to give him the opportunity to explain why Catfish Hickson was calling him and why he had agreed to meet with him, but I wasn’t sure how much more of an explanation I needed.
I had seen the interaction with my own eyes and I couldn’t imagine a scenario that would negate the underhandedness of Joel clearly being involved with the Wraiths after telling me he wasn’t.
He’d lied. Right?
I felt so stupid and I hated making mistakes.
Anna always told me that I was too hard on myself and that I took my own shortcomings too much to heart. But hindsight and having the ability to go back and pick apart all the ways I should have known better, were my preferred methods of self-torture.
I’d done it with No Whisk, No Reward, and now I was doing it again with Joel.
I rolled over to switch on the lamp and gather up my phone from the bedside table.
It was 10:13 PM and I had four missed calls from numbers that I didn’t recognize and one text message from Anna checking up on me.
I responded to let her know that I was fine, and that Joel and I hadn’t talked yet before getting out of bed and walking to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea.
A magnet affixed my Mr. Newman lanyard to the fridge and I stared at him while I waited for the kettle to boil.
“I’m not the snappiest piranha in the swamp of life, am I?” I inquired self-deprecatingly.
Mr. Newman looked back at me sympathetically.
Don’t take it so hard, kid, we all make mistakes.
“There were enough signs to have avoided making a mistake, I just didn’t want to see them. I appreciate the support though,” I countered.
Hmm. Maybe, maybe not.
“What else do you need to know?”
As I recall, you were promised an explanation. Perhaps, we should reserve judgment until you’ve received it. What do you think?
I sighed and pinched at my bottom lip thoughtfully as a firm knock came from the front door.
I hesitated for a moment, before starting toward it.
You owe me another jar of Sockarooni, he taunted me.
I stopped and turned back to the fridge.
“For what? Getting me into more trouble?” I scoffed and shook my head as I made my way over to the front door.
I held the latch in my hand and took a steadying breath before unlocking it and pulling the door open.
There Joel stood. Looking like a dog left out in the rain and I almost gave in and grabbed him by the front of his shirt and pulled him inside the apartment.
