Chapter Ten

Connor got a phone call from Ty West shortly before noon. With Donovan and company still in the wind, Connor had opted to hole up back at Casavetti’s ranch rather than returning to his home in Florida. Most of what was going on could be handled by phone or computer, but he wanted updates in real time, with live information.

He’d been getting regular updates from Donovan, so Connor was surprised to get a call from West. “What’s up?”

“Can we have a conversation off the record?”

Scowling, Connor signaled to Marge he’d be right back and stepped out into the hall. He headed to the library, where Casavetti had a huge leather sofa that had become his favorite place to hang out. “Yeah. But, fair warning, if you start telling me shit that needs to be on the record, I’ll stop you and let you know.”

“Fair enough. I had breakfast with Donovan and Isabelle this morning. I think the, uh … nature of their relationship has changed.”

“Shit.” Connor flopped onto the couch. “I was really hoping he wouldn’t go there.”

“I’ve been with them this whole time, and I’ve gotta say, it was pretty inevitable. But I felt like somebody on your end should know his judgment might be compromised.”

“His judgment when it comes to Isabelle Arceneau has always been iffy. That’s why I fought Rossi to be the one to go to New York.”

“Since keeping Isabelle safe is the prime objective, his lack of judgment shouldn’t impact much, other than a stronger-than-usual willingness to hang me out to dry if necessary.”

“He would have done that, anyway.” Connor scrubbed his hand over his face. “Whether their relationship got physical or not, he wasn’t going to have a clear head when it comes to her. It was an issue in Matunisia already, although that was a special kind of fucked up since Jack was hung up on Isabelle and Gallagher wanted to get Carmen out of the line of fire.”

“I guess what I need to know is…” The words tapered off, but Connor waited out the guy’s hesitation. “Is there a company line on this, as far as I’m concerned? If I have to choose between them?”

Shit. “It depends on the job. We’re not losing agents for stupid shit or morons, but let’s face it, we’re not guys who leave women to die, either. And if you choose to save Jack and Isabelle dies … he’ll probably kill you. You know, if that factors in at all.”

“That’s what I figured.” He heard West sigh. “I called you instead of Rossi because it’s not really an administrative thing, or doesn’t need to be, at least. You know Donovan better than anybody, so I figured I’d get your take on it.”

“You think I should join you guys?”

“I think the more people working your end, the better. We’re just in watch-and-wait mode here, so there’s not much you can do. I’ve got his back, O’Brien. I know you don’t really know me yet, but I’ve got this.
