“Are we almost there?” I ask.

“Nearly,” her voice warps, and there seems to be a hint of excitement to her tone.

She finds her way towards a wall, still keeping her hand in mine. She pulls a lever, and there’s a loud creaking sound as light pours into the tunnel. A ladder descends with a deafening crash. It’s just as dreadful as the previous ladder. She steps back, extending an arm, offering for me to go first. I frantically shake my head. She hums and turns back to the ladder, ascending in a blur. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that. Perhaps I need to surround myself with more vampires.

The ladder leads to an empty forest. There are scattered trees, and a stack of logs nearby. In each tree, there are hung targets, each with varying sizes and styles of arrows lodged deep inside them. Nightshade quickly closes the entrance to the tunnel behind me, burying it in the mix of dirt, leaves, and pine below our feet. Before I can register what’s happening, she takes my hand, leading me quickly towards the entrance to a cave, blocked by a large wall. She digs into her boot and finds a key. She turns the key to unlock yet another lever, which she flips down, and relocks.

The wall to the cave begins to rise. I jump at first, and she laughs, voice warping. She steps inside, beckoning me to follow her. I do, albeit a little reluctantly. She pulls yet another lever on the other side of the door, and the wall closes, assorted candles lighting up the cave. I’ve been here before, the day my wedding was interrupted, but I hadn’t taken the time to actually look at it.

There’s a long table in the center, and several chairs surrounding it. Not too far left of the table, near the crevice of a wall, is a blanket. It’s surrounded by several pillows, and a small side table with an open book lying face down. On the back wall of the cave are several different bows, ranging in size and craftsmanship. Several quivers hang, along with several other places to hang things. On the floor of the back wall is a large map of The Two Kingdoms, which I can only assume fell.

On the wall closest to the blankets, pillows, and table, posters have been hung delicately in the crevices. Upon further inspection, I realize that they are all wanted posters and news clippings.

The first one I see is of the shadow-blood with green hair. They’re all but bearing their teeth in a grin, one eye closed, the other entirely black. There’s blood dripping down their forehead, and splatters of crimson appear in the white flowers in their hair. Below their portrait reads, “Raven Ash. Shadow-Blood. Wanted for crimes of trespassing, theft, murder, resisting arrest, supernatural identity, homosexuality, association with Nightshade.”

Beside their poster is one of the white-haired elf, though at a much younger age, flames sketched in the background. It reads, “Sage Hemlock.
