NEW TITS, WILL TRAVEL

Borgie died as she had lived: alone. Irma and I were the only two people at her funeral. She had left extraordinarily complicated instructions for the procedure: her hair had to be washed and cut short, and she was to wear the dress from Vienna, her slippers on her feet. A picture of Ava was to be placed in her hands and the portrait of Herr Adolf from her bathroom at her feet.

‘So that she can recognise the bastard if she bumps into him up there. Or down yonder,’ Irma said. Her calmness was not cold-blooded. There were just no surprises for her in death, nor sorrow, for Irma believed that life went on beyond the grave. Borgie had simply passed through a door to the next room.

The following day Irma harnessed the jittery Joachim, her new responsibility, and they started their long car journey back to London and their new residence. I flew to Frankfurt with Cosima, a few of my husband’s remaining paintings wrapped up in the hold of the Boeing. The rest of the unsold exhibition pieces we’d left behind in Gary’s outhouse.

Cosima and I shook hands and said goodbye at the airport, where she flew on to Hanover and I left for Heathrow.

‘Goodbye, little cat. I won’t see you again,’ she said. She walked away, waving at me and didn’t look back.

In High Barnet, Donkey gave me cold fur when I tried to hug him with love. He shot me a look that could kill and went back to sleep. Mr Morgan was back with his movie-star mummy. Betty James wanted to know all the news, especially how and why my husband had taken rooms on the other side of London.

‘With a woman?’ she added; her eyebrows actually arched.

‘His nurse.’ Witch, I should’ve said. Stupid cow, I should have hissed, who got in the way of Wanda Ducci’s bullet.

‘How could you expose him to that insane Pole?’ James Blond was foaming at the mouth. I had never seen him so put out. Emotion at last! ‘Wanda Ducci is notorious. Because she has a diplomatic passport, it’s difficult for us to touch her. She’s killed eight of our most valuable operatives!’

I just laughed. How pathetic to be held ransom by a dizzy socialite. Blond then showed me Wanda’s file – or, one page in the file. Helmut Templedorf, Gustav Schimmel, Gerhardt Tannensee. Who were these people?

‘Nazis, like your husband. But also men with foresight. They kept detailed notes. They know things we need to know.’

‘You mean they knew.’

‘Yes, the list of eight will not be extended, I hope.’

‘Will you kill Wanda Ducci?’

‘No. We don’t do things that way. On the other hand, if you managed to bring her back into your sphere, maybe you could help us there.’

I didn’t allow him to elaborate. ‘My sphere is restricted to actions and reactions of a sexual nature or simple dirty talk on the phone. Killing is not part of my charm. And yes,’ I added on my way out, ‘a move to Turkey is a good idea.
