Millie and the Millionaire
Chapter One
Gavin Templeton had never considered begging anyone for anything in his entire lifeâbut this morning he was uncomfortably close to doing just that. In his office on the top floor of Templeton Towers, he sat at his desk across from Hannah Atkins, his executive secretary, whoâd just announced that she had to take an indefinite leave of absence.
Hannah was far more than his secretary. She was his right hand, his girl Friday, the only woman who knew him just about as well as he knew himself. What was almost more important, she knew the ins and outs of the day-to-day operations of the firm, keeping track of minutia with voluminous notes and her phenomenal memory.
As the CEO of Templeton Enterprises, Gavin was involved in multiple deals almost daily, flying off on the company jet to meet with corporate players often at a momentâs notice, entertaining businesspeople in town to sign contracts, negotiating the delicate details of multimillion-dollar takeovers. Hannah smoothed the way in all his dealings.
So attuned was Hannah after years of working with him, that she often anticipated his next move, his every need, and quietly took care of it all. An attractive, well-dressed, slender woman with a trim figure and sharp blue eyes, Hannah had been widowed twenty-five years ago when her daughter, Emma, was two. His father had hired her on, shortly after, and sheâd worked her way up. Her company knowledge was legend and her loyalty to Gavin absolute.
How could he let her go, even for a short time?
âHannah, you canât leave just now,â Gavin repeated the words heâd just said moments ago. âThis is a very crucial time. The Blair merger is days away from completion. We have to go over the contracts, check them out with Legal, set up the meetings. And then thereâs the Hudson buyout that needs special handling.â Gavin shook his head. âAbsolutely not. We canât spare you.â
Hannah busied herself placing several stacks of files on the solid oak desk that was clear of clutter except for a phone with a number of lines plus intercom and a yellow pad and pen. âGavin, you know I wouldnât leave if it wasnât of the utmost importance. But as Iâve told you numerous times, family comes first with me. My daughter needs me and I have to go.â
Using family as an excuse was foreign to Gavinâs thinking. His father had died when he was ten and his mother had taken off the year before. He had only his older half brother, Terrence Templeton III, known as Trey, but the two men led very different, independent lives. At one time he and Trey had been co-CEOâs, but for the last four years, Trey had opted to chase another dream. Even though his brother had recently married, Gavin held out little hope that Trey would return. In Gavinâs book, work came first and always would, in direct opposition to his brother.
He tried his most persuasive tone as he leaned forward. âHannah,
