Chapter Nine
It felt like a lead yoke had been lifted from Delaneyâs shoulders. She and Beau could be friends again. Her heart was as buoyant as her body as she paddled backwards to deeper water. With his acceptance of her apology, a tiny bit of her massively off-kilter life seemed to slip back into place.
And just because they were friends again, it didnât mean that she couldnât appreciate the hard planes of his torso as he stripped off his shirt. She bit her lip as the shirt joined her dress on the grass. His hands went to his button fly next, and in short work those were on the ground too, leaving him clad in nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs.
This was a great idea.
So what if the water was murky enough to hide all manner of slithery things, and that her favorite bra would probably be ruined. Seeing Beau in his nearly altogether was more than worth it. Feeling saucy, she let out a low whistle. âGood Lord, that is one impressive farmerâs tan you got going on there.â
He scowled back at her, setting his hands to his hips. âSome of us have had to work all summer, thank you very much. Iâm lucky Iâve got any tan at all.â
âWell, hopefully youâll scare the fish away with that white belly. Now come on,â she said, gesturing for him to join her.
âBeau Rodney,â came a voice from up the hill near the car, just out of her view. âWhat in the Sam Hill do you think you are doing?â
Delaneyâs heart sank straight to the bottom of the lake. Eyes wide, she watched as Beau swung around to see who it was. If they were trespassing, she was going to kill him.
âDamn it, Grant, what do you want?â
The owner of the voice strolled into view as he held up a rod and tackle box. He was about the same height as Beau, but with a noticeably broader chest and well-muscled upper arms. âThought Iâd do some fishinâ, but I imagine your ugly mug has chased all the fish off by now.â
He paused, catching sight of Delaney. A huge grin lit his features as he pushed up the brim of his hat with his thumb. âWell now, who you got there with you?â
âNone of your damned business. You can go fishing tomorrow night.â
Delaney realized then that sheâd seen this man before, on the lawn of the house being renovated on the way into town. And Grant was the name of the buddy who had worked on Beauâs house. She sighed in relief. If they had to be caught by anyone, this was their best-case scenario.
Finding her footing in the mucky bottom, she stood and started for shore. Beau whipped around, his eyes widening meaningfully. âWhat are you doing? Youâre in your underwear.â
She couldnât help but grin at the look on his face. What were they, ten? âYeah, so are you. It just looks like a bikini.â A mismatched bikini, but a bikini nonetheless.
