After going through reports with Marcello all morning, Andrew ate lunch and left early.

It was Thanksgiving for him, even if he was celebrating it alone. Casper had been coming and going at his own leisure. With no one to eat dinner with, Andrew chose to walk the streets of Milan’s shopping district. Anything to make the hours pass by quicker.

In Italy, it was just another Thursday. But Black Friday was an international event, and even the smallest of merchants were gearing up.

Every day was starting to feel black without Gwen.

Wishing Italy was warm all year round, he jammed his chilled hands in his pockets. Milan enjoyed seasonal changes like New York. He played a daily game of watching New York’s temperature to compare. Of course, every look at the Tri-State weather tugged at his gut knowing what Gwen was experiencing and that he wasn’t there to go through it with her. It made Italy feel like forty thousand miles away, not four thousand.

His mother was chipper calling from Bermuda. When he’d told his parents he’d be gone for the holiday, Sarah pouted for a week. But she got over the sting by planning to drag his father out of town for a long weekend.

“Is Dad at least enjoying the pool?” Andrew asked.

Sarah sardonically said, “No. He’s playing golf. I’m here by myself!”

Andrew sat on a bench facing a park. School had let out, and kids were playing. Their delicate voices tolled in Italian. He crossed his legs and pivoted his body away, fearing someone would call the polizia and complain about a strange man watching small children. “Can I talk to you for a moment, Ma?”

“Of course, my handsome boy. Do you need something? Do you need me to ship anything to you over there?” She said over there like he was on a military base in Kabul, Afghanistan.

“No. I assure you Milan has stores and I have everything I need.” Except Gwen. “So…” I can’t believe I’m going to say this. “I met someone, Ma.” The intake of air in his mother’s lungs was shockingly audible. “Ma, are you all right?”

“Hang on. I’m checking my phone to make sure I have the best signal possible. Because I don’t want to miss a word of this.” But she huffed, and said, “Hmm, well it looks like three bars is the best this five-star resort can offer. Go!”

“Okay, met someone was probably not a correct characterization.” He took a breath. “There’s a woman I work with. She—”

“In Milan? Let me tell you something right now mister. If you think I’m going to be continent hopping on a plane to visit you and my grandkids in Italy, you are mistaken.”

His fingers gripped the phone tighter. “No Ma. In the office in New York.”

“Oh!” She squealed in delight but then released an, “Oh-h-h. How is that working, long-distance and all?”

“Distance is not the problem at the moment, Ma. We…got together while I was in L.A. for the fashion show. She’s the woman who sits in my New York office.
