Chapter Seven
âIn a hurry?â Lindy asked as Josh hung up the blue blazer in the office. âAnd I donât think youâre going home. I wonder if that message I gave you has inspired you.â
âYou work in a hotel. You know how to be discreet.â
She smirked and nodded. âI saw how disappointed Mr. Michaels was when he didnât find you. Youâre going to end up running away from home with a magazine mogul.â
âOh, youâre not up on the latest.â He spoke without thinking because now he was stuckâof course she wasnât going to let him escape without hearing all about the Grady-Geoffrey connection.
âI spent more than an hour with him today and he never let that slip,â she said indignantly. âI thought I liked him, too.â
By the time she let him go, it was ten past seven. Eight whole minutes after the time he was supposed to be upstairs. By now he should have been naked. Or at least Grady should have been. Theyâd be to the begging stage by now.
Mm.
He thumped on the door.
Silence. He pressed his ear to the door and didnât hear anything, although maybe that was the faint sound of a television, but Grady hadnât struck him as a TV watcher. Had Grady forgotten? Had he already taken off?
Josh swallowed a shout of frustration and considered kicking the doorâexcept heâd probably be the one to repaint the door or fix the brass plate. He could see himself now, painting the door of the empty room.
Grady would be gone, Josh would be stuck, trapped in the loop of the hotel, the brewery, in the bar and at town hall. Heâd been restless before, but now heâd be lonely and alone. Nothing but the memories of some brief hot times to last through the grim winter. And fuck it all, with all that heat, how could Grady simply walk away from their chemistry? He thumped again even though he wanted to howl, shout curses and slam his foot against the brass plate andâ
The lock clicked and the door opened.
Grady, rumpled and pink cheeked, blinked at him. âI fell asleep.â
Josh pushed through the open door, so flooded with relief he didnât even care he now seemed maniacal.
He closed the door behind him and turned to grab Grady but saw heâd walked away.
The television was on, the volume set low. Grady picked up the remote and punched it off.
He studied Josh but didnât move any closer. Grady frowned. âYou okay?â
âI thought youâd gone.â
âI told you Iâd meet you.â Grady yawned so wide his jaw cracked. âYou donât trust me?â
Josh shoved his hands into his trouser pockets. He was not used to feeling insecure and this was not something he enjoyed. âNo, no. I thought⦠Maybe you didnât think it was worth your time.â
âWhat? Why?â
âI yelled at you earlier.â
âSo what? Anyway, I donât just walk off without a word.â
Josh let loose with the full rush of insecurity. âYou donât? You stick around? Or do you mean you donât leave without warning?â
He shrugged. âIf I go Iâll say something.
