Noah
Of all the…fuck!
After Rebecca stalks away from me, whatever anger I had toward her morphs into disappointment with myself.
Because I know it even before she disappears from sight, down the busy corridor.
She’s right.
I have been going into the auditions with a chip on my shoulder. At first, I was hopeful. I thought I was wanted and had the world at my feet. But as the audition opportunities stopped presenting themselves and I grew more and more desperate, I closed myself off. I got defensive. And now it shows in my readings.
Nobody wants a leading man who’s an asshole.
And most of all, I was an asshole to her.
I regret that.
Because if anything could make the shit going on in my life better, it’s her. The way she felt against me, the way she crawled under my skin and took hold…after we got out of that restroom, holding hands, I almost felt normal again. I almost felt like the old Noah Steele.
But this isn’t the right time. I can’t concentrate on her when my career is in a freefall.
Or is it? She’s right about Megalith. He’s not really a kiss of death. Maybe it’s my attitude that’s got me in this predicament. Maybe that’s what needs the makeover.
I don’t know. Fuck it.
I push my arms into my jacket, and as I do, I catch sight of a familiar face, near the duty-free shop.
It’s the man in the tweed jacket, whom about a thousand years ago, Rebecca had said was a potential serial killer.
I watch him, skulking around, peering in a garbage can before stepping into the duty-free shop. How the fuck is he still here? Did he miss his flight, too? I find myself laughing bitterly.
Dammit. She’s right about that, too. He does look like he’s up to no good.
I should tell her that, too.
Hell. All these things that I want to tell her.
And yet my feet are rooted to the spot.
Trying to shake off the thought, I grab my phone and check it. The flight is probably in pre-boarding now. I should be heading over there.
I should bite the bullet, be a grown-up, and board the flight back to the town that hates me unless I’m in head-to-toe blue paint. Because this city isn’t too fond of me, either. And yeah, work is work.
Rebecca’s right about that, too.
Fuck. Why can’t I get her out of my head?
As I’m thinking whether I should move, I see the bearded man in the tweed blazer grab the same perfume that Rebecca said she wore.
And wouldn’t you know it?
He slips it into his pocket.
I lean forward, watching him. He strokes his beard as he studies a display of magazines at the exit of the shop, then easily skirts out of the doors. The cashiers don’t notice. No one notices.
He’s so professional. It’s obvious he’s done this before.
I recall what Rebecca said. He should have Maximum Security stamped on his forehead.
I search the concourse for someone in a security uniform, but there’s never anyone like that nearby when you need one.
