Chapter Thirteen
#xa0;
Emily
“Emily! Emily, come quick, the goat’s in trouble.”
“What?” I dropped the dishtowel and followed Dad out of the back door. “Whaddayamean she’s in trouble? What can I do?” I was surprised to see him up. He’d been asleep when I got home and I’d assumed he was still sleeping. He must’ve snuck out to the barn when I wasn’t watching.
“Just come,” he called over his shoulder as he sprinted.
Dad was still fit and he got there well ahead of me. Huffing and puffing, I arrived at the goat pen to find him kneeling next to the doe.
“See, she’s hurting. Something’s wrong.”
I followed him in and knelt on the other side of her head. It was clear she was in labor and it certainly did appear something wasn’t right.
“I’ll call the vet. You stay with her.” I jumped to my feet and sprinted for the house as he called after me.
“The vet is number two.”
Number two? What does he mean? Ah, must be the speed dial number. At the house, I hit number two on speed dial. It rang twice before a series of clicks indicated the call was being forwarded to another number. I groaned. I was being transferred to an answering service. Two rings later, a man’s voice came on the line.
“Hello. Doctor Doolittle here.”
“Doctor Doolittle? Are you kidding me?” The local vet is really named Doctor Doolittle? That is just too perfect.
“Uh, no. Sorry…inside joke. I thought you were someone else. I’m…uh…I’m Doctor Webber. Can I help you?”
“Doctor Webber?” I was still trying to get my bearings.
“Yeah. Can I help you?”
“Yes. This is Emily Redfeather. Beatrice Redfeather’s niece.”
“Hi, Emily, what can I do for you?”
“We have an emergency out here, I think. Aunt Bea’s goat is in labor but she seems in a lot of pain. I’m no expert, but something doesn’t look right.”
“Okay. I’m about three miles from there right now. I can be there in less than five minutes. Do me a favor and make sure there’s a hose attached to a water spigot somewhere close by. I’ll also need enough light in the barn for me to see what I’m doing. Okay?”
“A hose? Don’t you want me to boil some water or something?”
He had a chuckle in his voice. “No, that won’t be necessary, unless you’re in the mood for a cup of tea.”
Terrific. Dr. Doolittle’s a smartass.
“Okay, I’ll make sure there’s a hose and light. Hurry.”
“I will.” He disconnected just as I was about to tell him I knew nothing about birthing babies and I didn’t want to be out here all alone with only my dad for protection if those mutant babies were born without ears. My skin crawled at the thought of baby goats with no ears and I had to remind myself it wasn’t their fault. The people who allowed a goat with no ears to breed were the ones at fault.
I was unrolling the hose out at the barn when the vet pulled up and jumped out of his truck.
