AFTER A SEVEN-MINUTE drive with the siren screeching and Zac amazingly holding a conversation on the phone with Dilly, they arrived at the hospital to find Faith still in the E.R. Zac’s dad was standing by the glass doors wearing jeans and an old gray sweater, slippers on his feet. Olivia put her arms around him and felt his shoulders heave.

“It’s pretty bad,” Gus Bishop said, his voice thin.

Zac put his arms around both of them.

After a few moments they pulled apart, but Olivia kept hold of Gus’ hand. She knew how much his children meant to him, especially Faith, the baby of the family, the glue since Mrs. Bishop died twenty years before.

“How is she?” Olivia asked.

Gus shook his head. “She was covered with blood. At first I thought she was dead.” He seemed to really see Olivia for the first time and he choked out, “You, too, honey? What happened to you?”

“Nothing important. I’m fine.”

“Dad, what happened?” Zac asked. His gaze was darting around and Olivia thought he was probably looking for a nurse, but they were ominously absent.

“Faith was getting out of her car. She’d parked it out on the street like she always does, you know, out in front of my place. Then the lady across the street said she saw another car turn the corner and head right for her. It hit her and then took off like a bat out of hell. I heard an engine gun and some tires squealing so I went outside and there she was…she was—”

His voice caught and he looked up at his tall, broad-shouldered son. “Who would do something like this to my little girl? What kind of person does something like this?”

“I don’t know, Dad. Did the witness get a license number or a car model or anything?”

“Not much of anything. It was the widow Farley who saw all this. She said it was a dark car, big, but she wasn’t wearing her glasses, so who knows. Who would want to hurt Faith? Sweetest girl in the world. And it’s my fault. If I hadn’t asked her to drop by with the damn newspaper, she wouldn’t be laying in there.”

Gus squeezed Olivia’s hand and withdrew a few paces, wiping his eyes with a tissue.

Overcome with remorse and guilt, Olivia moved away to peer through the glass doors, trying in vain to see past the curtains and knot of doctors and nurses.

Zac came up behind her and put his arm around her. She leaned her head against his shoulder. “It’s my fault she’s in there,” she said.

“Stop that,” he said. “It’s not your fault and it’s not Dad’s fault. Whoever was driving that car—”

“You know it has to be connected to these threats. I was worried about Faith and my mother and sisters and even you, but mostly I was worried about my babies. I never dreamed—”

“Hush,” he said, wrapping his arms around her. “Your twenty-four-hour deadline isn’t over yet.”

“It doesn’t matter. That man in the convenience store said he could change his mind again.
