âThere you are! Whereâve you been lately?â
Lou jogged up behind me and fell in step next to me wearing a huge smile despite the fact that he was red-faced and looked like heâd been running for a while.
âHey Lou, been a while,â I huffed as we jogged side-by-side but not close. âIâve changed my running schedule lately, so I guess thatâs why we havenât seen each other. How are you?â I slowed my pace so we could chat a bit. The new schedule worked better for Harper, but I had missed running with a buddy. Having a partner made it easier to keep my pace, and Lou was fun to talk toâfunny and engaging, making the run go faster as he dished all sorts of entertaining dirt on the other residents in the neighborhood.
âAll good, except for missing your smiling face. Whatâs new?â
âNot much,â I lied. No sense telling him that I was sleeping with my boss. He got a little too into gossip sometimes, and I wasnât entirely sure I could trust him to keep something that juicy to himself. âJust really busy.â
He watched me for a few beats. âYou seemâ¦different. Whatâs going on?â
His tone was pushy, like I owed him an explanation.
âOh yeah?â I glanced over at him and felt a little put off by the intensity of his stare. âHow so?â
âHappier. More, I donât know, comfortable here. Settled.â
I laughed, relaxing a little. âHappy, sure, but I wouldnât say settled.â
âSo youâre ready to move on, then? A new adventure?â He was smiling, but it didnât reach his eyes.
God, I hope not. I wanted to stay here in paradise with James and Harper for as long as possible, but James had told me straight out that he didnât know how much he could promise me. And Iâd told him I was fine with things being undefined. But as much as I was enjoying my time with James, I couldnât quite outrun the feeling that I could be tossed out on my ass at any moment. I didnât want to hold the past against him, and I understood why heâd wanted to rush home to Harper that first night we spent togetherâ¦but that didnât actually erase the sting of being kicked out. Discarded. Just like my mom discarded me years ago.
âNo, not quite,â I answer vaguely. âI mean, my assignment isnât over yet, so thereâs that.â
âWell, Iâm glad youâre still here. Honestly, I was getting a little worried youâd left without saying goodbye to me. I wondered if that boss of yours had run you off. Not many people can deal with him, from what Iâve heard. Have you got any good stories about him? I bet heâs a tyrant.â
I stifled a laugh. Typical Louâalways mining for gossip.
âHeâs been a really great boss. No problems to report,â I said simply, and I swear Lou slumped in disappointment.
We ran in silence for a bit until we reached our usual separation point.
âHey Kaitlyn, before you goâ¦â Lou said, moving so that he was standing in front of me, blocking my path.
