“WE’RE HERE, ELLA,” Mark shook her shoulder and she woke up with a jerk. Her eyes were wide and scared. “It’s just me, don’t be scared,” Mark whispered, and stroke the side of her face.

Ella nodded and tried to smile at him. Then, she noticed they were in front of her building and bitterness clouded her judgement.

He really didn’t want her to know where he was living and she felt like lashing out at him.

She didn’t do it, partly because she lacked the strength to go through a quarrel with him. She just smiled sadly and said, “Do you want to park in the visitors’ lot or do you prefer to park where you always park when you come over?”

“I was thinking I’d better to park in the visitors’ lot tonight, because I don’t want you to walk too much,” he replied.

“Don’t make me any favors,” she bit out. “Park wherever you want. And, by the way, it’s not necessary to babysit me. I wouldn’t want to have your night ruined with this,” she continued sarcastically.

She knew she sounded like a shrew, but she couldn’t refrain herself. Mark looked at her for a few seconds, trying to assess her mood.

“I don’t think my night would be ruined if I took care of you. Besides, I promised you a dinner and I’m a man of my word,” he replied thoughtfully.

“Yeah, sure,” she muttered, although she knew she wasn’t fair.

He’d never told her an outright lie. But then, he systematically avoided bringing her to his house and it was disconcerting.

“Okay, Ella, I understand you’ve had a rough night and you have a terrible migraine,” he said in a grave tone, “and that’s why I won’t take it personally. Let’s park the damn car and go upstairs.”

Ella glanced at him again and noticed the lines set at the corners of his mouth. He was upset, even though he tried to sound understanding.

She shrugged. She didn’t really care if he was dismayed or not, because she knew she had reasons to be upset with him. He simply didn’t like she could give up his help so easily.

Mark gritted his teeth and his fingers clenched on the steering wheel. He glanced at her again, and then, started his car and drove to the visitors’ parking lot where he helped her out. Then, he gathered the bags he’d left in the back seat.

The trip in the elevator was silent and fairly uncomfortable. Ella looked down all the time so she wouldn’t look at him, yet she felt his eyes on her.

His constant attention felt somewhat unnerving and her resolve not to address him at all started crumbling. Luckily for her, they got to her floor before she caved in.

As soon as they got into the apartment, she went into her bedroom without a word to him.
