âWEâRE HERE, ELLA,â Mark shook her shoulder and she woke up with a jerk. Her eyes were wide and scared. âItâs just me, donât be scared,â Mark whispered, and stroke the side of her face.
Ella nodded and tried to smile at him. Then, she noticed they were in front of her building and bitterness clouded her judgement.
He really didnât want her to know where he was living and she felt like lashing out at him.
She didnât do it, partly because she lacked the strength to go through a quarrel with him. She just smiled sadly and said, âDo you want to park in the visitorsâ lot or do you prefer to park where you always park when you come over?â
âI was thinking Iâd better to park in the visitorsâ lot tonight, because I donât want you to walk too much,â he replied.
âDonât make me any favors,â she bit out. âPark wherever you want. And, by the way, itâs not necessary to babysit me. I wouldnât want to have your night ruined with this,â she continued sarcastically.
She knew she sounded like a shrew, but she couldnât refrain herself. Mark looked at her for a few seconds, trying to assess her mood.
âI donât think my night would be ruined if I took care of you. Besides, I promised you a dinner and Iâm a man of my word,â he replied thoughtfully.
âYeah, sure,â she muttered, although she knew she wasnât fair.
Heâd never told her an outright lie. But then, he systematically avoided bringing her to his house and it was disconcerting.
âOkay, Ella, I understand youâve had a rough night and you have a terrible migraine,â he said in a grave tone, âand thatâs why I wonât take it personally. Letâs park the damn car and go upstairs.â
Ella glanced at him again and noticed the lines set at the corners of his mouth. He was upset, even though he tried to sound understanding.
She shrugged. She didnât really care if he was dismayed or not, because she knew she had reasons to be upset with him. He simply didnât like she could give up his help so easily.
Mark gritted his teeth and his fingers clenched on the steering wheel. He glanced at her again, and then, started his car and drove to the visitorsâ parking lot where he helped her out. Then, he gathered the bags heâd left in the back seat.
The trip in the elevator was silent and fairly uncomfortable. Ella looked down all the time so she wouldnât look at him, yet she felt his eyes on her.
His constant attention felt somewhat unnerving and her resolve not to address him at all started crumbling. Luckily for her, they got to her floor before she caved in.
As soon as they got into the apartment, she went into her bedroom without a word to him.
