Chapter Six
"Well, good morning," Callum greeted me, with a huge grin on his face. Just the day before, the two of us had been playing at platonic relationship, and now we had given in to our true feelings and everything felt a little more solid.
"Morning," I replied, and he wrapped his arms around me from behind and held me in close, nuzzling his face into my neck as he went.
"Hey, save a little for the rest of us," A voice came from behind us; instead of jumping away from me, Callum just glanced over his shoulder and smiled.
"Hey, Xander," he greeted our roommate, and I felt a wave of nervousness at the thought of him seeing the two of us together. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Would he be mad at me for clearly fooling around with one of his roommates? I was surprised that he seemed to be regarding us with a cool amusement, as though he couldn’t care less.
"You two have a good night?” Xander remarked, and Callum grinned at him.
"We sure did."
"Callum showed me the chess club for the first time," I cut in, hoping that I would be able to deflect any discussions of exactly why we’d gotten back so late the night before. But before I could say anything, Jason wandered on in to the kitchen, yawning and running his fingers through his hair.
"Bad night?” Callum asked sympathetically, and Jason nodded.
"Somebody got back late and woke me up," he replied, grinning at the two of us.
"Sorry," I mumbled, but Jason touched the curve of my waist as he brushed by me.
"No problem," he replied. Okay, so now I was even more confused. None of them seemed to be bothered that Callum was all over me, even though I’d already...uh, expressed a physical interest in all of them.
"You up to anything interesting today?” Jason asked as he brewed himself a pot of tea. I shook my head.
"No, I just have a study date with my friend," I replied. "And then I have to get to work on this essay I’ve been trying to avoid."
"We keeping you too busy to work, huh?" Jason teased, and I slapped the heel of my hand to my forehead.
"Shit, work," I muttered. "I have a shift at the shelter tonight, I completely forgot about it..."
"The shelter?” Callum asked with interest.
"I do some work at an animal shelter in town," I explained. "Nothing fancy, but I need to get there this evening..."
"Do you think you’ll have time on top of everything else?" He asked, concerned. I shook my head and winced.
"No, I think I’m going to have to cancel," I replied with a sigh. "Shit, I hate leaving them in the lurch like this."
"What sanctuary is it?” Xander asked. We hadn’t spoken much since our night together, and I still couldn’t get a decent handle on him.
"Bell Paws," I replied. "I’ve been working there a couple of years, mostly admin stuff, but—"
"Right, you’re a do-gooder, we get it," he teased, but there was a sharpness to his voice that kind of threw me off-guard.
