The concert

Jeff took a shower, then changed into some jeans and his favourite denim jacket. He ate a bag of potato chips then washed them down with cola. He met Jennifer at the Civic Center, where a large crowd had already begun to fill the hall. She removed the backing from his backstage pass and pressed the satin sticker on his jacket. Before repeating the process on herself, she asked him the meaning of the ‘AAA’ letters, printed on the pass.

‘Access All Areas.’ answered Jeff excitedly. ‘These are usually given out to the band members and also the promoter.’

She squealed with delight and walked proudly through the waiting crowd. You could sense the excitement in the air, as the young couple waited by the side of the stage for the show to start.

A little after 8:00 PM, the house lights dimmed and a loud voice boomed over the PA system; Alright Dannerville – light the torch, it’s time to get scorched - get on your feet and feel the rock ‘n’ roll heat...of FLAME!

Lights flashed, dry ice filled the stage, pyro exploded and the greatest rock ‘n’ roll show on earth had begun! The band sounded tight, as Marc screamed through the set-opener, Rock ‘n’ Roll Cities. They churned through song after song, and Jennifer and Jeff danced and screamed their lungs out. Flash even walked over to them and shook Jeff’s hand.

After the encore, the lucky youngsters headed backstage and mingled with other guests as well as the band members. There were several people there, including members of local band Grey Wolf, who had opened the show.

Jeff saw other musicians as well, including Steve Conway from The Fifty-Eights, who remembered him from the school dance. It was a great atmosphere and an evening Jeff would never forget. T.J presented him with an autographed photo, which read:

Jeff, thanks for your help and stick with your writing, T.J.

As they walked to the taxi rank, Jeff lifted a Flame poster from the wall as a souvenir. Travelling home in the taxi, he asked Jennifer how T.J knew he wrote poetry?

‘I read Midnight Clouds to him - and he loved it!’ she said smiling. He looked at the signed photo once more and held her close to him. Once home, he burst through the front door and told his mum all about the evening and finally disclosed his secret to her.

‘Oh, he looks quite wicked.’ she commented, looking closely at Jeff’s photograph.

‘It’s just his stage image. Anyway, I am beat,’ said Jeff yawning, ‘I’ll see you in the morning Mum.’

‘Yes, sleep well.’ she said. Jeff was still smiling when he turned off the light. T. J’s words of encouragement buzzed around his brain and he felt confident in furthering his writing skills. After all, T.J wrote songs which were loved by millions of people all over the world.

The next day Jeff slept in and then caught up on some Science and English homework. Cool winds and drizzling rain made it a perfect day to spend indoors.
