ELEVEN

JOSEPH LOOKED UP at Bitsy, a ridiculous grin spreading across his face. His skin was covered with bright yellow pollen, making him look clownish. His eyes were abnormally bright and shiny but rimmed in a feverish red. Even under his soft brown skin, his color had begun to turn a ghastly shade of yellow.

Joseph stood suddenly, swaying on wobbly legs, and motioned for Bitsy to come forward. She hesitated, then shook her head vehemently. When Joseph saw she wasn’t going to join him, he snorted in disgust and turned back to the flowers.

He fell to his knees. Sitting on the grassy soil inside the ring of flowers, he buried his nose once again in the bright yellow blooms. The color continued to drain from his skin. Dark circles appeared under his eyes. Bitsy could only stare as Joseph deteriorated rapidly in front of her.

Then, with one arm wrapped around several stems and the other holding up his weight against the ground, Joseph leaned over and vomited. When his stomach was empty, he looked up at Bitsy through glassy eyes, grinning, just before burying his face once more and sucking in a draught of the poisonous pollen.

“Oh god, Joey!” Bitsy screamed. “Get out of there!” She stood up on Yaar with her hands planted firmly on her hips and her head tilted to one side.

“Why?” Joseph countered, giving her a mean look. “These flowers are great! Get off that stupid carpet and join me.”

“No, Joey! You’re sick. Can’t you see that the flowers are poisonous?” Bitsy’s hands covered her mouth as Joseph leaned over once again and vomited. The spasms lasted several minutes before Joseph could take control of his body, leaving him weak and lying on the ground. As if they were a lifeline, one hand still grasped a handful of the yellow blooms.

Joseph pulled his head up, his eyes searching for Bitsy. “Whar ya, Bits?” his voice slurred. He squinted, but his eyes rolled everywhere. “Ya leaf me? Why ya leaf me ‘lone?”

“I’m here,” Bitsy called, her voice filled with sick panic. “Come on back, Joey! You’re sick. Come on back, so I can get to you!”

“Ooooh, Bits, I don’ feel sah good.” Joseph was bent over again with dry heaves. He struggled to keep his head off the ground. His elbows ground into the soil as he held his head up in his hands. He took a deep breath, curled up, and tried to push his muscles into a standing position. Before he was all the way up, he fell back down, wallowing in the vomit already on the ground.

“Joey!” Bitsy screamed as he fell. “Joey, come back!”

He finally made it to his knees. “Jeez, Bits, I think I’m gonna be sick again. I can’t see ya, Bits; are ya still here?” Joseph’s voice was filled with desperation.

When he looked up, searching for her with his eyes that could no longer see, Bitsy realized she didn’t recognize him. His red, glassy eyes bulged blindly. Dark circles ringed his eye sockets.
