“How’d we get stuck with this job?” James grumbled as he trudged through the knee-deep snow in his cold-weather gear, which was better suited for looking hot than for actually staying warm. “Dave is practically a lumberjack, for God’s sake. He should be the one out here swinging an axe and felling trees.”

“You know his leg wouldn’t like hiking out here for long. It would stiffen up in the cold.” Devon patted him on the butt. “And I’m not settling for some less-than-perfect tree from the fringes of the forest.”

“No kidding. We’ve been walking for almost an hour. What if we get lost out here?” He gestured to the woods surrounding them, despite the fact that they all had GPS on their phones and compasses in their backpacks.

Neil rolled his eyes at James’s dramatic streak.

“I’ll let you eat me to stay alive.” Devon winked at them.

“Now, that doesn’t sound so bad.” Neil dropped the rope attached to the sled he was dragging behind them and tackled her, turning so that she landed on top of him in a snow bank.

Laughing, they wrestled until the last thing he was, was cold. Stiff, though… Well, he was getting there. Not much of a shock since he spent most of his life hard and lusting after his mates.

“Ah, fine. Be all cute and happy and shit.” James retired his bad attitude in favor of piling on top of them. He landed loud, smacking kisses on both their cheeks until they dissolved into a fit of laughter.

When they’d caught their breath, and defrosted some, Neil began to look around.

“Do you see what I see?” he asked as he pointed across the clearing.

James broke into the Christmas carol, dancing his way over to the spot where a single ray of light pierced the clouds and shone onto the perfect motherfucking tree.

Neil got to his feet and held his hand out to Devon.

“That’s the one.” She squealed, then clapped her hands and charged toward it like a bunny bounding through the snow. He followed behind at a steadier pace, hauling the sled and their gear with him. As he approached, he realized the tree was bigger than he’d originally thought.

“How tall do you think it is?” Neil asked, scratching his chin as he eyed the top of the tree.

“Don’t worry. It’ll fit.” Devon waved him off.

James couldn’t help himself. “That’s what she said.”

“Don’t you mean that’s what he said?” She poked him in the ribs. Everyone knew James didn’t let a good dick go to waste.

Their teasing devolved into chasing, which resulted in the two of them crashing through the bottom branches of the tree. They disappeared in a puff of snow.

“Are you guys okay?” Neil lifted a bough to peer at the place they’d tumbled into. It was surprisingly cozy out of the wind and flurries. James and Devon sat near the trunk of the tree, peeking around their makeshift fort.

“Wow, I feel like we found a secret room in the forest,” she whispered, as if she might break some kind of spell if they were heard.
