CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Cooper?” Daisy. The one voice in the world that had the power to rip off his bravado and reduce him to that sad-sack little kid who’d wanted too much. “Wait up.”

He closed his eyes, torn between his insatiable desire to be with her and the need to make a clean break. Being around her and not being able to have her was pure torture. But, of course, none of this was her fault, so he waited for her to catch up.

Her sandals slapped against the pavement, and low level clouds spattered mist, dampening her dress so it clung to her curves. “What’re you doing?”

“Heading back,” he said.

“Yeah, I see that. You left without saying goodbye.”

Dammit, she was so beautiful, her spirit so fierce. Keep it business. “With the two hour time difference, I have to get up early to check in with Emmie. When will you talk to Mickleson?”

“Can you give me a few hours—say, midday? I’d like to get confirmation from our judges. I’d feel a lot more confident if we could get one or two really high profile people.”

“He’ll have some good connections of his own.”

The smile that broke across her features made his body hum. “That’s a good point. I wanted to deliver him this winning package, but he might want to get involved once he hears our plan.”

They walked in silence for a bit, and he could see her working through something. “What’s going on, cinnabun?” He found it impossible to be strictly business around her.

“I saw you talking to Ethan.”

So that’s why she came after me. “Yeah? So?”

“So he upset you.”

“I’m a big boy. I can handle Ethan.”

“I know. But if he said anything about the paternity thing—”

“I don’t care. What he says or thinks has no impact on me. None.” As they passed under a lamp, beads of mist glittered in her hair like yellow diamonds. She walked close enough that the back of her hand brushed his, and each pass sent sparks shooting up his arm. “Forget about the Blackstocks, okay? Let’s end your birthday on a good note.”

“You’re so freaking stubborn.” She glanced behind her, in the direction of her car, but kept pace with him. “I do have some good news, though. I figured out a solution to your lodging problem.”

“Yeah?” So had he.

“You can move into my cabin, and I’ll stay with my mom.”

This woman. She was the best person he’d ever known. “Not kicking you out of your place, Daze.”

“Oh, don’t worry. My bedroom at my mom’s place is fully intact.” She smiled. “It still has my Green Day and Weezer posters on the wall.”

So many of his fantasies had centered around her bedroom—the perfect intimacy of the two of them in her bed—but he’d never had a clue what it looked like. He smiled at the image she’d given him, even if it came ten years too late. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m all set.” They’d reached the junction where he’d veer left to get to his cabin, while she’d go straight to hers.
