He brushed the cap of blond hair back from Mikey's face, then leaned down and kissed his cheek before he tugged the blankets back over him. Quietly he left the room.

Being a father was a new and strange trip for Ben. He learned things all the time. Tonight he'd learned that loving a child put the rest of his life in perspective. Kids could cut through all the illusions and wishes and get right to the reality.

Ben went into his room, and as he stripped off his clothes, he fought the memory of Reggie tugging at his shirt, of her hands on him. Quickly he went into the bathroom and turned on the water in the shower stall. He didn't bother to wait for the warm water, but he stepped under the cold stream and braced himself as the chill started to banish a heat that came just at the thought of Reggie.

She'd be their neighbor. That made him uneasy, but he pushed that feeling aside. The house was great, perfect for Mikey and any other children who came into their lives. It didn't matter about a neighbor with amber eyes. It didn't matter at all. He reached for the sponge and started scrubbing it over his chest, but there was little he could do to scrub away that feeling of her hands there. Or that persistent wish that Dennis had never shown up.

He stepped out of the shower, grabbed a towel and went into the bedroom. For a moment he looked at the huge bed and wondered if he'd be able to sleep tonight after what had happened. He didn't want to toss and turn, tortured by the images of Reggie.
