Chapter 20
Oliver loomed over Sierra. “Just give up, and this will be over.”
She clutched her belly, trying to breathe past the agony. Her throat spasmed from the smell of her bile lying a few feet away from her face. Oliver had done that. He had humiliated her in front of everyone. For that alone, she wouldn’t yield.
“Oliver, Oliver, Oliver,” his friends chanted, and he smiled and waved at them in response, giving Sierra time to collect her wits. But what could she do? Her fighting skills were inferior, and she didn’t see anything she could use for telekinesis—nothing, unless she used Oliver’s body against him.
True, normally she only ever moved objects. But she had used telekinesis on Maxim before, who as a scrawny Charmer didn’t compare to the tall Dragoon in front of her. Still, she had to try. It was her only option.
Sierra focused and visualized with full force Oliver hitting the ground, visualized it until every cell within her quivered, and her muscles trembled with tension and agony. A new sheet of sweat coated her skin, and her heart beat painfully fast.
Oliver frowned, realizing she was doing something, but not comprehending what. And then he flew backward. As a Dragoon, he could’ve probably used his ability to stop his fall, but his cockiness had cost him. Not anticipating her move, he hit the ground with a loud thump. Sierra grabbed one of the chair’s broken legs and straddled him, pointing the sharp end against his throat.
“Once again, Miss Reeves takes the win.” James’s voice sounded from far away, as did the murmurs of the crowd. Sierra remained crouching over Oliver, the wood still in her hand until James approached her and motioned for her to get up. “Let’s get you cleaned up.” Dazed, she nodded and followed him into the academy. “You were amazing.” James handed her a bottle of water. “Unfortunately, celebrating your win will have to wait. Lorna would like to speak to you.”
A stocky female Guardian checked Sierra from head to toe, determining that she was fine and had no broken ribs or internal injuries. Sierra was promised that, overnight, her supernatural body would heal any bruises and scratches she had sustained.
James said something about how proud he was of her and that they would go over her technique tomorrow. She didn’t really listen, finding it hard to concentrate. Her brain was filled with fuzzy cotton, and her muscles twitched with each step. Somehow, she managed to reach the library without keeling over.
James opened the door. “This is where I leave you.”
“You’re not coming with me?”
He shook his head, and a surge of panic broke through her haze. This would be her first one-on-one conversation with the regent. Knowing there was no way out of this, Sierra stepped through the door.
Lorna sat in one of the velvet chairs, her steel-gray gaze burning into Sierra. “Please sit and have some tea.” Lorna took a sip from her china cup. “What you did out there was remarkable. Less than a month of training, and you were able to beat our graduates.
