“They’re really closed.” I stare at the abandoned website that’s loaded on my phone.

“You didn’t believe me?” Rhodes smirks while steering our ankle biters toward the grocery section.

Gage and Payton are engaged in a pretend sword fight. The lady seems to be besting the knight, based on her stealthy jabs. She’s graceful while plotting her next move, searching for his weakness. My son is less covert in his approach. His actions are flashy and reckless. It’s all about stage presence with that kid.

After an internal shake, I get myself back on track. My bottom lip juts out in a dramatic pout. “Nothing against you, but I didn’t want to believe it. Vali-Hi is a relic.”

A comforting touch settles on the small of my back. “Don’t fret, Firefly. I’m on a rescue mission to revive this extravaganza.”

“Oh, my. An extravaganza?” I clutch a palm to my fluttering chest. “Careful or my expectations will go through the roof.”

Rhodes winks. “The better for me to exceed them.”

“Cue the swoon, Suave.” I almost sag into him for dramatic effect. That must be where Gage gets his knack for animated flair. “My faith in you is restored. Not that this wasn’t already solid. Gotta keep you humble, though.”

Hunger sparks in his coffee eyes. “Damn, you really have no clue.”

I shiver from the heat in his voice. He’s made similar comments at least twice before. If he keeps up with these romantic gestures, I’ll connect the dots pretty darn fast. This is already starting to feel like a whirlwind affair.

Which serves to remind me that I should be careful.

My gaze returns to the screen and our reason for this impromptu trip to the store. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around this news. It’s really disappointing.”

His determination to save the night leads us to the snack food aisle. “Maybe they’ll reopen. Their social media page is filled with pleas and requests to get the place running again.”

The fact that he’s invested in their story eases the sting. Rhodes wanted to plan our next outing. Originally that included one of the last standing drive-in theaters in Minnesota. It’s the only one that holds sentimental value. But the proof is glaring me straight in the face.

I ignore the rock that’s dropped in my stomach. He has a backup plan, which began with picking us up at our house and taking a detour to Target. Now there’s an empty basket hanging from his bent elbow. The next task is combing the candy selection for our favorite indulgences. It’s obvious the guy has something special in his back pocket. I’m not referring to those tight buns either.

Another sharp jerk of my head sets me straight. Time to get a grip. His firm butt is off-limits.

My thumb swipes as I search for any crumb suggesting a rebound. “I hope this isn’t the permanent end for them. My parents took us to Vali-Hi all the time when we were young. It turned into a hot spot for teenage summer nights too.”

A secret grin crosses his lips.
