Taylor mulled over his reply until Bev apologized and pushed back her chair. Offering them the use of the theater room or spa, she retired to look after Diederik. Her guests lingered in the dining room until the efficient attendant produced a heaping bowl of hamburger meat for Tikal, which they carried back to the guest suite.

While the dog gobbled down his dinner, Taylor kicked off her shoes, rolled up her pant legs, and plopped down on the ledge of the pool that lapped into the guest suite. Lit from below, the water swirled golden green around her calves.

Mark joined her. Hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder, they used the cover of Tikal’s noisy slurping to confirm that their first order of business was to let Oscar know they’d come specifically for him. Their second, to get him the hell off the island.

Tikal finished his dinner before they could discuss how best to accomplish both objectives. Licking his chops, the dog came over and butted Mark’s arm.

“You need a run to loosen the kinks, don’t you, fella? Me, too, but I think we’ll have to settle for a short walk tonight. Be back shortly, Taylor.”

She swished her leg in the pool, watching man and dog make their way to the lower level of the terrace. Tikal sniffed the unfamiliar scents, went into the undergrowth, and rattled the bushes. His exploration must have tripped a silent alarm, as spotlights blinked on and the entire garden lit up like a runway. Mere seconds later, two men in black T-shirts and jungle fatigue pants converged on the scene.

Tikal went immediately into attack mode. Ears back, fangs bared, he dropped into a crouch. Taylor saw one of the guards whip up the weapon slung over his shoulder and started to shout a warning, but Mark had already intervened.

“It’s okay! He’s with me.”

Slowly the watchman lowered his weapon. Tikal remained in a crouch as Mark attempted to make peace.

“Sorry about tripping the lights. I should have asked Bev or Diederik where to walk him. We’ll head back into the house now. Tikal, let’s go.”

The dog rose but before following Mark, he padded to a palm tree a few feet from the nearest guard and lifted his leg. The spray arced, glistening in the bright floodlights, and splashed when it hit the scaly trunk. Cursing, the guard leaped to the side.

Taylor bit her lip. Under any other circumstances she would have been grinning from ear to ear. But when the guard jumped, she got a good look at his weapon.

The men who’d come out to rescue them from the raft had carried sidearms and an assortment of police-type paraphernalia. This guy was toting a Heckler & Koch military-style assault weapon, one of the new, lightweight Commando versions that could be fitted with an under-barrel grenade launcher.

The prospect of getting Dr. Hayes off van Deursen’s island without calling for a full-scale invasion by a joint U.S.-St. Kitts task force suddenly seemed a whole lot more remote.

Mark’s expression when he strode into the guest suite told Taylor he’d gotten an eyeful, too.
