SHE’S GONE. THE THOUGHT cripples my brain even when I should be absorbed by incoming intelligence. But it all means nothing. The shots fired at the White House were a decoy—of that we agree. The target was my wife. Bile rises, burning my esophagus with the truth.
Charlie has been taken.
I don’t need CIA narratives to confirm it. The aching emptiness in my heart did that when the first bullet hit the window. Tentacles of fear strangle the life out of me one breath at a time. I have never known its full strength before now. Every memory has become a blurred slide clicking into place, the vibrancy bled dry in comparison to the bright terror of this moment. She’s gone. Not since Sara’s death have I felt this helpless, paralyzed by my failure to protect her.
A nuclear bomb could fall on the emergency operations center and I would survive, whole and ready to lead. Sequestered with my staff and those key to ensuring the well-being of the country, everyone is safe except for the most important person of all.
“Mr. President?”
Evan. I’ve been expecting him. Protocol dictates the Chief of Staff will share news of events that could shatter the commander in chief. I swallow because his crumbled brow and hallow eyes say it all. “Is she alive at least?”
He nods. “We believe so.”
Relief and desperation pitch my pulse into an unnatural pattern. “Who?”
“We don’t know that yet.” He holds a hand to my shoulder to keep me in place. “We’re on scene where the motorcade was taken. The first and third cars were seized, two agents wounded, the other two missing. Mrs. McKenna’s car was found five miles farther down route-sixty. Johnson is dead.”
“Christ.”
“Every agency is working on finding her. By your order, a net was cast: roadblocks set up and all transportation suspended from the district and neighboring Virginia counties. They’re not going anywhere.”
“That leaves a lot of ground to cover, houses to search. Get Carla ready. I want the kidnapping broadcast on every goddamn station every second until she’s found.”
“No.”
I straighten my shoulders and singe him with my stare.
“Don’t let this out. Not yet. We all believe it’s Kilpatrick. He wants you to fall in front of the people, become vulnerable to the world. You need to remain strong, the voice of reason in a time of uncertainty. If word gets out that your wife is missing and you play into his demands, any number of threats will come in. Every family member in this administration will become a prime target, and you’ll chase your tail the entire term. No one can know.”
“I have to call her parents and Ali.”
His nostrils flare. “No one. We can’t know how they’ll react to the news or explain a rush of family to the White House, not when we’ve closed the district. Right now, we’re working under the guise of an imminent terrorist attack and we’ve asked people to stay home. Do not share this until we know what we’re dealing with.
