Lucille

Lucille hid in the trees outside Maxi’s Bed and Breakfast, staring at Roq’s window. Raquel turned out the lights shortly after arriving. She was probably asleep, but Lucille couldn’t bring herself to leave. It was more than wanting to make sure Roq was safe. There was a glimmer of hope that if Roq saw her outside, she would recognize her foolishness and ask for forgiveness.

Roq had no idea of the dangers in this world. Without the ward, Roq’s power was free and would make her strong as she grew more and more into them. But would there be enough time? There was no doubt her family would not stop until Roq was dead.

“You’d have better luck talking with her face to face than from down here,” Shaw said.

Lucille glowered at him. “Are you following me?”

He stuck his hands in his pockets and leaned against a tree. “Maybe.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want to see either of you get hurt.”

“What are you talking about? You’re not making sense.” She leaned her backside against another tree.

“You have feelings for Raquel.”

“Of course, I do. She’s a decent soul and is dealing with a heavy load.”

“Come on, First One. It’s me, and I know you better than anyone else. Your feelings go beyond just general concern.”

“And what about you?”

Shaw gave her a lopsided grin. “We aren’t talking about me, though.”

“Are you admitting you have feelings for her too?”

“Like you, I care about what happens to her.”

“Which is why I’m asking you to keep an eye on her.”

“In case you don’t remember, my house is currently nonexistent.” Shaw ran a hand through his hair.

“Yeah, I remember I was there, but you and I both know that you have more than one house. I don’t think someone who is going through what she is going through is going to enjoy a condo in hell. It’s the one place her family can’t find her.”

“Her family may not be able to find her, but if they do things the right way, the assassin they hire will be able to go anywhere.”

“True, but if you were at that house, you’d be closer to me in case you needed some help.”

“So, you trust me, but you don’t trust me?”

“I trust you, but I trust myself more.”

“Look, I get that. But here in this town in Lilith Springs, there’s an army of people who will fight to keep her alive.”

“Do you think everyone will help her?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Why? She’s only been here a couple of weeks.”

“True, but she’s Brad’s daughter, and everyone loved Brad. And a lot of us owe Brad favors, but since he’s dead, there’s no way for him to collect. Even if she wasn’t Brad’s daughter, she’s your special friend.”

“What does that have to do with it?”

“How can someone as powerful as you be so stupid?”

“Excuse me?”

“This town loves you, and they will do whatever they need to do. We’ve got your back. Get that through your head. None of us are your family by blood, but all of us are your family by choice, and hell we make a better family than the one you were born into.
