MIKE HEARD THE KNOCK on his door.

Julie Anne asked from the bed, “You wanna see anybody?”

From his stance at the window, looking out at the stars, he said, “Only Meredith.”

Julie Anne got off the bed and opened the door. “Hi,” he heard her say.

“Hi.”

Mike’s gut clenched at the rawness of Meredith’s voice.

“He wants to see you, Meredith...” There was a shuffling behind him, then he heard the door close.

In seconds, he felt a hand on his shoulder, a firm but gentle hand that belonged to his mother.

“You okay?” she asked.

He nodded, his throat full of too many emotions to handle.

“I’m sorry about the bag, Mike. I didn’t know.”

Still facing away from her—he was afraid to look at her, afraid he’d lose it again—he said, “I know you didn’t. It’s okay.”

“I’ll bring the bag back.”

Propelled by the crazy things he was feeling, he whirled. “No! I don’t want you to bring it back! Don’t...just don’t...it will mean...I want the bag...I want...I want you in my life, Meredith. Don’t take it back.”

He stared at her for a minute, then threw himself into her arms. She caught him solidly to her, cradling his head against her.

“Don’t take it back. Please. And don’t go away.”

She gripped him tighter. “Oh, Mike. I won’t go away. Ever.”

He burrowed into her, feeling like a fool, but unable to stop the flood. “Promise?”

“I promise.”

She held him and let him cry, soothing him with a hand through his hair, one down his back. It felt so good to have a mother touch him like that again. He’d missed it so much, and he hadn’t even known it.

When he was a little more composed, he pulled back. He ran both hands over his eyes, and shook his head. “I’m sorry I lost it.”

“Oh, sweetie, never be sorry to show how you feel. Especially with me.” She smiled. “Especially with your mother.”

It was the first time she’d called herself that. He’d noticed how carefully she always avoided using the word before. He never thought he’d hear her say it— never thought he’d want to hear her say it.

But he did. He wanted to hear her say it really bad.
