I leave the Mrs. Claus costume on my mom’s bed and change into pajamas. I lay down on the lumpy futon and try to barter with God to help me fall asleep quickly.

God, I’m sure, has other things to deal with, and it’s a solid hour before I feel even remotely tired. But then, I hear the front door open and the voices that follow.

My parents and Max are home.

Their voices are indistinct, and I go completely still, same way I did as a kid when my parents came and checked on me—even though my flashlight and my book were pressed up against my leg under the covers.

After a few minutes of noise, laughter, and conversations I can’t quite make out, I hear footsteps walking up the stairs and down the hallway. The light under the door is blocked out by two shadows that look like feet.

I’m holding my breath.

I know it’s Max. And I know he’s trying to decide what to do.

I want him to go away.

The footsteps start back down the hall and are followed by the sound of a door slowly closing.

When I hear the click of the latch, I realize that wasn’t what I wanted at all.
